1. The green light is quiet mysterious, we don’t really know what it is we can only guess. « that might be the end of a dock »

And it’s kind of like the person could only see the light when gatsby was stretching towards it, as soon as Gatsby left, the person was in the dark. « ...Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness »

2. This appearance of the green light is just as important as the first one, mostly because the way the light is presented now is totally different than when we first saw it. Instead of the “enchanted” magical object we first saw, now the light has had its “colossal significance,” or its symbolic meaning, removed from it. This is because Gatsby is now actually standing there and touching Daisy herself, so he no longer needs to stretch his arms out towards the light.

This separation of the green light from its symbolic meaning is somehow disturbing and full of sadness. Gatsby ignores Daisy putting her arm through his because he is “absorbed” in the thought that the green light is now just a regular thing.

3.Now the light is totally being an object we can see and the only way the green light exists is in Nick’s observations. This means that the light is now just a symbol and nothing else.

But it is not the same symbol it was in the first chapter. For Gatsby the green light is an antology

Shannon

The Great Gatsby – Computer work

1. In the first extract, the green light is described as a « single green light, minute and far away ». We get a sense of mystery coming from this light source, we don’t know what it is, why it’s there. In the second extract, the same sense of mystery is given as Daisy doesn’t tell us about the green light when Gatsby points it out « You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock. » . The light even becomes a metaphor, something Gatsby can hold onto as he awaits for his reunion with Daisy in the second and last extract « the colossal significance of that light » « Gatbsy believed in the green light, the orgastic future... »

2. To him, the light was hope for a future with Daisy. When he looked at that light, he could feel close to her. We could imagine he had associated the light to Daisy, because it was so close to her, and staring at the light was a way for him to feel closer to her.

3. He wanted to reach Daisy, and so, he needed to reach the light. When he finally got close to the light, he thought this dream of being reunited with Daisy would finally be accomplished. Gatsby and Daisy were separated by a lake, and the only thing in between them was that light, which was located on Daisy’s dock. Finally being on the other side, he was close to the light that gave him hope for his dream.

4. No. His dream was crushed right when he finally thought it would come true. He got close to Daisy, they fell in love all over again. But Daisy ended up with Tom. Destroying him forever. And ever. And ever. And then he died.

5. I guess the green light would represent something quite similar to the reader to what it represents to Gatsby. We could say the light represents Daisy, the distance between the two, his hope to be reunited and something allowed him to wait for her without feeling too desperate and depressed.
