Manifest Destiny was the belief that the Americans were entitled to the land they found, explored, and "discovered". This idea pushed out many Native Americans from their rightful homes and into small reservations that could barely support them. The only population in the "newly discovered" areas were the white explorer's, pioneers, and their families.

I think we did have a more cohesive national identity in the second half of the 19th century than we do now in the 21st century, but that seems like a good thing. In the 19th century, white males were the most prominent voices in America and their opinions made up most of the national identity, whereas in the 21st century, anyone can be an American. White males still have the most prominent voice, but little by little, women and minorities are making their voices heard and diversifying America. We may not all have the same culture and traditions anymore, but we don't have to in order to call ourselves American.
