Over there nobody will look down on her, because I will make her speak perfect American English."

Commentary: Once in America, the mothers of the Joy Luck Club discovered that their daughters are criticized by their husband. The mothers realized that their daughters had a problematic life, even though they speak "only perfect American English".

Quote: "I wiped my eyes and looked in the mirror. I was surprised at what I saw. I had on a beautiful red dress, but what I saw was even more valuable. I was strong. I was pure. I had genuine thoughts inside that no one could see, that no one could ever take away from me. I was like the wind."

Commentary: Lindo found her strength. She was the wind. She took matters into her own hands and used her strength to blow out her marriage candles. By blowing out the marriage candles, she wouldn't be linked to her husband and choosing her own fate. Though she was still married to him, she waited around to see what fate had in store for her in the future.

"It is in a book, The Twenty Six Malignant Gates, all the bad things that can happen to you outside the protection of this house." "I don't believe you. Let me see the book."

Commentary: The book symbolizes a mother's devotion to protecting her child from any danger that comes its way. In the Joy Luck Club face difficulties with their daughters. They want to shield and protect them from the outside world but trust and communicating interferes between the mothers and daughters. In China, it's always best to trust your mother because mommy knows best. But, mothers can't always be there to protect their children from dangers.

Off to the side is the black vase, the smooth cylinder broken in half, the freesias strewn in a puddle of water...... "Fallen down," she says simply. "It doesn't matter," I say and I start to pick up the broken glass shards. "I knew it would happen." "Then why you don't stop it?" asked my mother.

Commentary: The marble end table and black vase represents Lena's marriage with Harold. The marble end table is wobbly and shaky. The black vase is bond to break because it's so flimsy. Unfortunately, the the black vase shatters into pieces and the marble end table collapses on the floor. Lena knew it would happen and her mother questions her daughter why she is doing nothing to prevent this down fall in her marriage.

But my family called me Meimei, "Little Sister."

Commentary: Her mother loved the name Waverly so she named her daughter after the street they lived on. Then it will come to you and hide in the comfort of your shadow."

Commentary: An-mei and Rose both lack wood because they are sensitive to other's opinions. An-mei desires her daughter, Rose, to not be actually like her in life. She wants Rose to not let people talk down of her and for her to speak up, to stand up for herself. An-mei wants Rose to know that her life is worth living and fighting for.

There were so many ways for things to get better."

Commentary: Suyuan leaves her life in China to start a new and better life in America. She is crying with geniue feeling and he says, "Promise! Promise! Honey-sweetheart, my promise is good as gold." Then he pushes her onto the bed. But he doesn't come back. In me, they see their own daughters, just as ignorant, just as unmindful of all the truths and hopes they have brought to America. They see daughters who grow impatient when their mothers talk in Chinese, who think they are stupid when they explain things in fractured English. They see that joy and luck do not mean the same to their daughters, that to these closed-Americans born-mind "joy luck" is not a word, it does not exist. They see daughters who will bear grandchildren born without any connecting hope passed from generation to generation.

Commentary: The mothers of the Joy Luck Club sacrificed their life and a little piece of themselves to pass down to their daughters. They are afraid that their stories, luck, hopes, and Chinese cultural is not passed to other generations. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself.
