After eight years of fighting the brits were forced to recognise the independence of the 13 colonies and therefore lost an important part of their empire.

Australia:
The convicts had a variety of diseases (like pox) that killed 50% of the Aborigines and very little expertise in farming leading to famine in the first few years before the colony was able to provide on its own. There was a number of violent encounters between the Aborigines and the former prisoners. The Aborigines also fell victim to multiple massacres. Britain had found a way to decrease the number of prisoners they had to deal with. Simultaneously this way they did not have to send off valuable workers to build the basis of a colony.
