I have one student whose cultural heritage is very important to them. I provide them with worksheets representing that culture and during goal work when he is asked to provide writing prompts I provide culturally relevant images for him to get his prompts from.

My students are very open with me and will actually pull me aside to discuss any problems they may have with not following the rules of the classroom, or if a fellow classmate is having a hard time. We also have time during the beginning of class to chat and answer their questions. It really helps cut down the talking during instruction time.

I have a group of kindergartners and I only have 20 minutes to work with them so I do my BSE lessons in the hall on the way to and from their classes. We play games like follow the leader and red light/green light.

I make sure to connect with all my students. I make eye contact, I smile, I compliment good choices. I give lots of choices. I do all that I can do to make sure they feel safe and welcome in my class so we can do our best work. I make sure they know I'm glad they are here.

I give students opportunities to respond and tell me when things make sense or don’t make sense. We respond verbally or with gestures so if a student doesn’t feel confident they don’t have to respond verbally for everyone to know. We also have time to think and explain their thinking even if it’s “off topic” because that’s what they are connecting to.

I have three social skills groups mixed in with either reading or writing. This groups are arranged by grade level and so I will have a story that is relevant to that grade level that we read together then each student is given a worksheet that aligns with the story we read together that they answer questions on. After they finish the questions (normally only 2-3) they share their thoughts with their elbow partners and then we share as a whole group.

My students copy down and respond to a quote each day. As class we then discuss what they think it means and they then get to respond to each other in a quick discussion.

We read social stories, like how to be a good friend, then do a game where they pick a card that says things like, "say mean things", "help a friend who fell down", and put it in the good choice column or bad choice column.

I have a group of kids who love to be the teacher. I’ve found that having them “teach” the class how they got an answer is a great way to explain their reasoning.
