1. What does each of the three models represent?

The Divergent Boundary model represents an area where two tectonic plates are moving apart from each other. This is typically found at mid-ocean ridges.

The Convergent Boundary model represents an area where two tectonic plates are colliding or pushing toward each other. This can create mountain ranges or subduction zones.

The Transform Boundary model represents an area where two tectonic plates are sliding horizontally past each other. This is often associated with major fault lines, like the San Andreas Fault.

2. How does it show the movement of plates?

The Divergent model shows the plates pulling away from a central point, revealing the material underneath.

The Convergent model shows the plates pushing together, which can cause one to slide under the other or both to crumple and fold upwards.

The Transform model shows the plates grinding past each other in a side-to-side motion.

3. After learning about plate boundaries, why do you think it is important to understand how they work?

Understanding plate boundaries is crucial because their movements are responsible for many of the Earth's most significant geological phenomena. By studying them, we can better understand and prepare for natural disasters.

Predicting Earthquakes: Most earthquakes occur along plate boundaries, particularly transform and subduction zones. Understanding their movement helps scientists predict where and how often major quakes might occur.

Volcanic Activity: Volcanoes are often found at divergent and convergent boundaries. Understanding these zones helps us predict volcanic eruptions and their potential impact.

Landform Formation: Plate movements are what build mountains, create ocean trenches, and shape continents. Knowing how they work helps us understand the geography of our planet.
