Mark Twain
Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better know by his pen name, Mark Twain, has been loved by many readers since he first began publishing articles in his brother's newspaper in the early 1850's. He is know for his novels "The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin" and " The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". He was also know as a riverboat pilot, journalist, lecture and inventor.
He was born in Florida, Missouri, he then moved to Hannibal, Missouri which was on the Mississippi River. Living on the Mississippi gave him many of his ideas for his novels. As he got older he moved out west to Nevada and California, where he panned for silver and gold to try to help his family out. This turned out bad and he was flat broke. After this is when he went to work for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprises and worked as a reporter. Twain became one of the best known story tellers in the west. his next step was when he took a 5 month cruise on the Mediterranean, this is where "The Innocents Abroad" came from and then became a best seller. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon and they settled in Buffalo and had 4 children. Everything was great but he had his struggles like losing his son to a sickness and his "favorite" daughter died in 1896 at the age of 24. Then his other daughter died and left him with his middle daughter that he really did not get along with. Afetr his wife died in 1909 he became bitter with life and had many unhappy moments.

He went on to write many more novels and for the last 15 years of his life he was filled with public honors including degrees from Oxford and Yale. He was probably the most famous person of the late 19th century. Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, died at the age of 74 in 1910 in Redding, CT.
