For the first lesson, we wrote down on a piece of paper some historical facts of the London Bombing because it can help us think of how the scenes will play out and what are the key information that the audience needs to learn at the end of the performance. Then we started brainstorming some ideas for the performance and what technique we should use and what message we want to convey to the audience. Some ideas that we had was that the terrorist were stort of s puppet masters and controlling the sleeper cels on were they needed to attack. We also thought of having a split scene, where the terrorist were discussing on where they should attack and the others were making the bombs. We also thought of doing episodic theatre. This reminds the audience that they are watching a performance and they get less attached to the characters. The first scene would be a news broadcast, where we would say a lot of information.

For the second lesson, we discussed in detail what our performance was going to be. We brainstormed more about what each episode contained and how we are going to use the techniques to make the performance affective and we discussed on what information each scene is going to have. In the first scene we wanted it to be a news broadcast. This will inform the audience about the London Bombing. The second scene was were the terrorist were planning their attack and the others play out their ideas. The third scene is where there is a split scene of where some attacks happened (bus and metro) and they had a conversation with two strangers. We wanted the audience to understand that anything can happen at anytime. The last scene is a nursery rhyme of “London Bridge is falling down”. Then we started to rehearse and see how we could make it affective and how we can use some techniques. Our artistic intention is to create a performance that educates the audience about the London Bombing by using techniques that were used in performances from Bertold Brecht. The message that we want to convey to the audience is that anything can happen at anytime and you have no control over it.

For this lesson, we practiced the first two scenes and try to perfect it. The news broadcast wasn’t a major scene to rehearse because it was just the news anchor speaking. We just need to create a script because sometimes Maitreyee forgets some key information that the audience needs to know. In the second scene, in the beginning we wanted for the scene to be layered. To have people in front imitate what the people (terrorist) are saying that are in the background. We changed it because the audience would have difficulty to see the people in the back and it was too messy. Instead we decided for it to be a split scene. First the terrorist brainstorm about where they will attack and when they are done talking, the other scene start. We start acting (making the bombs) and then we become a still image with a caption (The sleeper cels are making bombs which will be used for each different location of the attack). This is a visual representation of us making a bomb. The caption gives a clear indication of what we are doing and this reminds the audience that they are watching that happened in the past.

For this lesson we needed to perform our scenes to receive feedback. Since it was the first time that Lily was back for a week we had to inform her of our changes. In the first scene we didn't change anything. In the second scene, we focus the terrorist in the middle, under the natural night with the lights off (under the circle that is in the ceiling, where there is natural light). This made it feel more shady. Then the other people were sitting in the audience answering some questions. This made the audience feel more alienated and this reminded them that this is a play. Then we also had Lily ask a question about what are the sleeper cells and the terrorist answered this question facing here. This made the audience feel even more alienated. The feedback that we got is after Maitreyee finishes the news report, that she should change what she is phrasing and make it more clear that this is a news report talking about an event that happened about ten years ago. She should say: “Why are we still talking about this? It was 10 years ago.” The other feedback was very positive. They liked the idea of people sitting in the audience. It made the audience feel more alienated which is what we were trying to do.

For this lesson we continued on brainstorming for the next scene. One of the ideas is that the terrorist are having a conversation with civilians in a spilt scene. The idea is that one civilian (bus) will ask a question and the terrorist (metro) will answer. We wanted to show that about the same conversation is happening but in two different places. We wanted to portray the message that anything can happen by anyone and you have no control over it. The terrorist were also talking in third person narrative which alienated the audience. While we were rehearsing this the others were working on changing the lyrics on the nursery rhyme. They changed the lyrics of “London Bridge is Falling Down”. While we were rehearsing the song, we created choral movements which were visual representation of the lyrics. The nursery rhyme explained how people react after the bombing and a little bit why they did it. The nursery helped the audience distance them self from feeling sad emotion for the character because the song is a little a bit up beat and while we are singing it we are smiling because we are laughing (little bit). This helps it for the song not to be heavy emotionally.

For the third scene where the terrorist have a conversation with the civilians in the bus and metro. We should see what the civilians are doing and what they are thinking. One of the ideas that were given is that a civilians leaves (and come backs) and the terrorist says "I am ready" multiple times. We should make some research about the survivors about the bombing. We could show the story about the survivors and what they went through and felt. The rest of the performance went well.

(The picture is for April 10th)

One of the ideas about the information is about the survivors. So we did some research about some survivors. We had an idea to play the recordings of the survivors testimony. The testimonies explain how they felt but also what happened before and after the bombing. One person would stand in the middle of the room and use third person to say their name. This makes the audience feel more alienated. We would do this instead of having a conversation in the bus/train. We decided to take it off because in London no stranger will have conversation together. Everybody is too busy to talk.

In this lesson we continued to brainstorm some ideas for the performance to be more didactic. We wanted to give more information about the sleeper cels. We found information about them. So we decided to describe the day jobs of each terrorist in the third person narrative. We would do this after the head terrorist finished their plans. The idea is that while the terrorist are having a conversation on where they should attack the sleeper cels would imitate their day jobs. Then they would introduce themselves in the third person narrative about why they joined and what they are (student, professor…) This gave the audience more information about the bombers and their reason to attack.

For this lesson we needed to perform to an other group. The first part of the performance (news report) went well because we hadn't changed it from the beginning so we knew how to act it out without any problems. The second part of the scene didn't go well because it was the first time that we performed the whole thing in front of an audience. The scene consists of two over laying scenes. The part where the two "main" terrorist were talking and discussing where their attack was going to be went well because we didn't change the idea from the beginning. The second layer of the scenes is where we introduce the sleeper cells. First they imitate their day jobs while the "main" terrorist are talking. Then they introduce themselves (name, age, job, and maybe why they joined). We did this so that the audience will have more information on the terrorists. This was ok when we performed it. We didn't say as much information as I wished because we didn't remember and this a new idea that was a bit rushed. Then we performed the nursery which went well. Then the last scene was where we played a recording of the survivors. This perform well because we had technical difficulty (the clip played to early, and it stoped to early). We didn't know which person had to introduce which character in the third person narrative. The end waas just a mess because we were disorganized for the ending of the performance. The feedback was good for the first part of the scene. They didn't understand what we were imitating in the background when the "main" terrorist were talking. We were trying to act out their day jobs but they didn't understand it so we need to improve on that. They also talked about on how disorganized we were on the end of the performance but I already noticed that during the performance. So we need to improve on how the scene will go through and how we can make it affective to alienate the audience and for it to be didactic .
