In current society, “… there are good leaders working in every organization, large and small. In fact, quality leadership is all around us every day… Without good leadership, our institutions and society would fall apart” ((Daft & Lane, 2018). The question is what it takes to be a great leader? I think People should recognize their own advantages and disadvantages, have a self-assessment, set up leadership goals and create an action plan, to grow up in the leadership journey. The purpose of the paper is to create my own leadership development plan, including illustrating my personal leadership vision, what are my two leadership goals: develop rapport with my colleagues & leading with honesty, especially how to achieve my goals, and anticipate the outcomes of the goals.

My first goal is developing a rapport with my colleagues. Why I set this as my first goal? Because building a relationship with employees is crucial. Since the late 1970s, leadership ideas have focused on relationship area: interaction and influence between leaders and followers (Daft & Lane, 2018, p.19).

How to achieve this goal? The following is my action steps.

Step1: Learn the true communication

Buffett as one of the richest people, also can be considerate as one of the warmest leaders. He emphasizes communication, he will ask the employees talk to him, and “he places a high value on interacting and collaborating with employees at all levels” (Daft & Lane, 2018). The communication not only just means talk to the employees, but the most important is also that listen to the employees, especially listening sometimes can be hard for a leader. I think only a Two-way communication can be called communication, if the leader just “communicate” to the employees only, this action only can be considered as “guide”.

Step2: Care employees’ emotions & Motivation

The following steps are caring employees’ emotions, motivate them, and provide a positive atmosphere. “Much evidence points to a clear connection between people’s moods and various aspects of their performance, such as teamwork, creativity, decision making, and task performance” (Daft & Lane, 2018). The following Exhibit showed that people in positive environment works hard with high efficiency. As a leader, especially a high emotional intelligence leader, we need to notice and care our employees’ daily emotions. If they stay in a negative emotion, the work cannot be done well. We need to motivate employees, cheer them up, try our best to provide a positive working environment.

My second goal is leading with honesty. Why I set this goal? Because honesty is the top 1 leadership quality. “Effective leaders are ethical leaders. One aspect of being an ethical leader is being honest with followers, customers, shareholders, and the public, and maintaining one’s integrity. Honesty refers to truthfulness and non-deception. It implies an openness that followers welcome” (Daft & Lane, 2018).

Step 1: Be able to admit own mistakes

It is hard to admit the mistakes, especially for a leader. Leaders can admit their mistakes, but sometimes they ascribe the outside forces "People who believe their actions determine what happens to them have a high internal locus of control (internals), whereas those who believe outside forces determine what happens to them have a high external locus of control (externals)" (Daft & Lane, 2018). I, as a leader, want to balance the locus of control in middle points. I do not want to be a leader with an external locus of control, I need to find out my own reasons, but this does not mean that I will aim to be an internal locus of control leader, myself cannot always be the primary reasons cause issues. I need to admit my mistakes, and find out the real reasons, to be a wise leader.

As a leader, I need to listen to my employees’ comments. We all need to be sincere with all reviews, feedbacks and criticize. There is no perfect person, no perfect leader; however, there is a good leader always can be modest and listen to all the suggestions and improve themselves. I will not assume myself as a perfect leader, people all make mistakes, what I need to do is to accept and be honest about all feedbacks.
