Tüm omurgalılarda ve insanda beyin ile omurilik, Merkezi Sinir Sistemini (MSS) oluşturur. Merkezi sinirler dışında kalan tüm sinirler, Çevresel (periferik) Sinir Sistemini(PSS) meydana getirir. Çevresel sinir sistemi, merkezi sinir sistemine bilgi gönderir, bilgi alır ve vücudun homeostasisini düzenler. Beyin ise bütünleştirici bir işlev yapar. Omuriliğin esas görevi basit tepkilerle reflekslere cevap vermektir.
