When I first got to AVID, I wondered why we spelled out "What Students Need" through the Essential Skills but did not do the same for "What Educators Do". The Foundations of Instruction are a great step in that direction. They primarily focus on Insisting on Rigor and Aligning the Work. I wonder if we have plans to further define what it means to Remove Barriers and Advocate for Students?

I love the focus on the FOI because it specifically states what ALL educators should focus on to create a rigorous and engaging classroom. It doesn't matter if you are a new teacher or a veteran if these components are happening in your classroom then most students are getting what they need to be successful.

I just facilitated the updated Site Admin 2 CoP and the FOI section came close to the section where we had a discussion around the importance of PL not being one and done. We participated in a World Cafe around coaching, modeling and feedback as a follow-up to PL. I used the FOI and connections to ACE as a way to build on this thinking and planning.

With FOI in mind, the journey helps guide our work because based on their AVID experience there should be certain things happening in the teachers classroom. When visiting classrooms with DDs and Principals we can relate back to this and explore any gaps, celebrations, or areas of growth based on what we observe and connect it with future PL opportunities.

I think the timing is right in this recipe for success! Most people who have had at least some touch with AVID have had some exposure to the Framework, so as they add to their prior knowledge, they can proceed to operationalize the Framework into their implementation!
