Today I’m going to explain Table 7, Law 12 to you. It states “Anyone who gives a false testimony shall be hurled from the Tarpeian Rock”. This law basically means that who ever presents a false piece of evidence that is a lie or not true then they will be punished by being thrown from the Tarpeian Rock.
Another thing that I’m going to explain is Table 9, Law 3. It says that “ When a judge appointed to hear a case accepts money, or gifts, for the purpose of influencing his decision, he shall suffer the penalty of death”. I’m simpeler words this means that when a judge gets bribed with money or gifts by one of the sides (wether it is the Plantiff or the Defendant) that might change his decision then he will be punished with death.

The impact that the twelve tables has on the government is that they were the begginning of a new approach to laws where they would be passed by government and written down so that all citizens might be treated equally before them. It was a first step which would allow the protection of the rights of all citizens and permit wrongs to be redressed through precisley written laws known to everybody. This later beacame followed by many subsequent civilization right up to present day. It was written in a public place so citizens were aware of what was legal and illegal and they knew what rights they had.

Three common principles that the twelve tables had was trial by jury because in Table 7, Law 12 it talks about not giving false information in a trial so we can infer that there is a jury. Another principle is the right to bear arms because in Table 7, Law 13 it explains that if you intentionally kill someone then you should be charged guilty with murder but if it isn’t intentional or by accident then he will publicly seek for forgiveness and rule of law because now the citizens will be aware of what and where their laws are.

The influence these Roman laws still have on us today is that now we know what we can and can’t do because the laws are publicly available for us because it’s not like if we get accused of murder we can say that we didn’t know it was illegal because we can look it up on the law which is online. Back then the people wanted the law to be public to them because before then when they did certain actions they wouldn’t know if it was legal or not so they felt like they had a right to knowing what was and wasn’t legal so when they were about to do it they we aware that if they did it they would but charged with a crime, this is were we got the idea of publicly showing laws.
