Closeness

While reading the chapter on closeness Ratliff describes this element as “two or more musicians, or musical elements acting in the purest coordination. I agree with Ratliff when he says this because closeness is something that can be developed over time in a piece of music. I think that this element of music has a lot to do with maturity within a piece and the performers. It takes a lot for others work to achieve such perfect harmony. Closeness means that’s all parts are able to connect with each other and when that idea happens it makes for an amazing piece of music.

"When musicians create a functional counterpoint or rhythmic pocket, or when singers sing in harmony correctly, without falling off pitch, that's one kind of achievement"

I think in this quote Ratliff does an amazing job describing closeness.

This is an example outside of Ratliff's list that I think does a really good job of showing closeness in perfect harmony.
I think applies to Ratliff because you can see the flow because of perfectly in harmony all the musicians.

Now this an example from the book. I think he chose this song because of the way the instruments flow together to make the piece connect.

"Sometimes the closeness of two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits. The connection between them becomes the power source, creating enough energy for the rest of the band to feed from or mirror."

I think that this quote does a good job explaining what comes from practicing closeness and how it benefits a band.
