The "Invisible Problem" of Filipinos

So the idea i want to get through is that Filipinos are mostly invisible when it comes to community, history and the like, such as when it comes to treatment, they don't usually get the best treatments, or how even in world history they are mostly passed or how they are usually grouped with Asian Americans so people assume the same stereotypes even though Filipinos are different from Japanese or Chinese.

I guess one way i can get the idea across is one of two ways. One way is by making a flyer that points all the information I want in some bit sized bullet points but are the more hard hitting. The second on is to make an power point that also goes through the points i want to also talk about. It does help that i do have access to both formats though I will mostly try a flyer kind of idea.
Victor P.

I want to be able to address the mental health that Filipino Americans experience especially the young adults. As a young adult, i experienced some of this struggles during my academic life and i wonder if other filipino Americans experienced what I experienced or if it was worst for them. I want to talk about the effects of it to the young adults in their everyday life. i want to be able to share awareness because Filipino's mental health aren't always talked about and not a lot of people address it.

My original plan was to make a trifold with all the important informations but due to the pandemic i am planning on my making a website that address this problem. In that website, i will be including a powerpoint and also a flyer. Im also thinking about spreading awareness through social media especially since the mental health awareness month is coming up next month and it's a perfect time to share it. All the things and experience, i will be putting it on the website.

Mari G.

For my symposium project, I want to shed light on the topics Filipinos often excuse or ignore due to shame. This ties into the issue of hiding mental health issues and sexuality/gender identity. Often times these topics go discussed indirectly or never at all. Dancing around the issues is harmful/burdening for the individual(s) who deal with them and continues to feed into the idea that it is wrong to be any way that isn't mentally healthy, cis gender, and straight. I came to care about this topic because it is something I personally resonate with and am/have been affected by.

The format of my symposium will be an illustration depicting how responses are currently to the mention of mental health/LGBT+ and then another side of how the responses should be if we all were true and open without feeling the need to hide or excuse ourselves.

Matthew E.

I want to address how some Filipino habits are toxic and provide a more positive mindset. I experienced this a lot and understand how it could be proven fatal to a person's mentality. It should be addressed to all Filipinos because it can change how we can treat ourselves and others. I came to care about this topic because it affects everyone's mentality due to this toxic mindset. I want to change how we can think about ourselves and to others for a better mentality/health.

A possible format for my symposium would be an interactive power point where I could layout and present to my audience. I would put my experiences, possible scenarios where my audience can interact in some way. My other format could be a flyer or poster inciting my topic and show the negative and positives that can change how my audience feel.
Joubert T.

BEING A MIXED FILIPINO: THE GOOD & THE BAD

Our symposium project focuses on the life of multiracial/multiethnic Filipino Americans, and how their racial identity affects their mental health. Although there are some pros about being a mixed race like growing up with a more diverse background, there are also some cons. Furthermore, we want to discuss the stereotypes that the media puts on these individuals that may mess with their mental health. One reason that we chose this as our topic for the symposium was our own racial background. We believe that our generation is becoming more racially diverse and it is important for people to get a better understanding of these individuals.

We originally wanted to make a trifold for the information of our project with little objects that show our racial backgrounds however now we have resorted to making brochures. We think that this is the best way for us to provide knowledge however we want to make sure that we use more images and charts rather than text. We think that if our brochure is just merely text, people will not want to look at it. We also want to add as much color as possible to attract the eye of our audience.

Cj B. & Mimi T.

My Research project for the symposium is to study how as students, how 1) our education is being affected during quarantine, 2) how our mental health is affected during quarantine, and 3) what are the resources, coping mechanisms, etc. that are used to cope with the negative or positive effects during quarantine. This research project I've decided to open up to not just Filipino Americans however, a large part of my research will be focused on Filipino Americans. My research, I hope, will be able to be used universally and apply to different ethnic groups.

Originally, this project was to focus on the difference of educational values within the Filipino American community. However, with this ever changing pandemic and this digital age of electronic/remote learning, I saw it fitting to adapt to this change. Although the study group has changed, my overall idea has not. I do want to focus on education, but more specifically how remote learning has changed our idea of education dramatically.

Eli Bagaporo

my symposium project focuses on the gender roles and race. I believe this topic is important because views of expected behavior from genders and perceptions of race can stay the same or change over time. In doing so I wanted to compare the experiences Filipino-Americans from the past to Filipino-Americans today. Not just filipinos but also any Asian-Americans and people of color. I want to discuss the stereotypes people with on the daily and what was expected from them based on their family.

I originally wanted to do a flyer but I thought it couldn't fit the amount of information I wanted to put into it. So I've decided to use google slides where I can put the most important points. I am also going to include results from my survey. I think people will want see other peoples views and experiences.

Jessie R.

This project typically talks about who are being discriminated upon, being racially biased, and who are greatly underestimated. This is important because it helps us become understandable towards people with different skin color and being bashed with stereotypes. I care towards this topic because as a fellow Filipino-American, I am greatly offended on how their are Hierarchies between white and black people. Blacks are known as inferior and whites are known as superior. it is just the same for the Filipinos because some also experienced those especially in the Philippines where they racially prejudice the darker Filipinos.

I originally wanted to do a poster and I did it just to show a simple structure of what Colonial mentality really is with a gist of some videos that shows racism even in other countries. I think people would understand and avoid racism after seeing the video and understanding the meaning behind my poster.
