The Manifest Destiny is a phrase created by John L. O’Sullivan. This phrase was a way to explain the feeling or attitude during the time of expansion of the United States. Because of this phrase the western settlement, Native American removal, and war with Mexico was encouraged.

On page 130 Stephen F. Austin talks about how he just wants to establish a peaceful farming state. This is important to history because this was during a time where America was constantly changing and settlers felt that this was their land and that nobody could take it away. Austin led the first groups into the fertile areas along the Brazos river. This angered the Mexicans and he landed himself in a Mexican prison. The last sentence of the quote says "Can this state of things exist without precipitating the country into war? I think it cannot." This quote tells me that Stephen F. Austin is angered with his new neighbors and they dont seem to be happy with him either.
