People who committed crimes faced harsh and violent executions. Most of the time, executions were held in a large public area, and was considered a public spectacle.
~
One form of punishment was an object called the "Brank" or "Bride's Scold. The brank was a large cage like object with a sharpened metal strip with spikes in the middle which would be placed in the mouth. Any slight movement in the mouth would "more than likely cause severe injuries to the mouth. This type of punishment were for women who would gossip and keep running their mouths'. The woman is then led to a whipping post or a platform where she is verbally abused to the public.

Another form of punishment for women who kept gossiping was the ducking stool. This device was similar to a seesaw, except it was made for torture. On one end, there would be a chair and the on the other would be a lever. The device is placed with the chair end above the lake with the victim strapped on the chair. The accused woman would then be dunked in the water. Depending on the crime, "the woman could be ducked any number of times, and in some cases of extreme measures." Some women could also drown due to the long amount spent underwater.

Crimes in this time had a large array of punishments; punishment by hanging could be sentenced for stealing something of five pence, or begging on the streets. One form of punishment was for the committing of treason. The unfortunate person would be taken “to the place of execution upon an hurdle or sled, where they are hanged till they be half dead, and then taken down, and quartered alive; after that, their members and bowels are cut from their bodies, and thrown into a fire...” This and most punishments were held in front of a huge crowd in order to show the people of this time the consequences of committing even the smallest crime.

Another form of punishment was burning at the stake or beheading. Usually only the upper class would be beheaded, and, as always, a large crowd would come to see it. The executioner had to strike the prisoner many times before the head was completely severed off. Because “Consciousness remains for at least eight seconds after beheading”, the executioner would take the head and show it to the crowd, then to the dead body. After death, the head would then be displayed along with others in public places.
