What one moment would you change for the character to give him or her a different outcome?

To change Hamlet’s outcome I would have modified his ghost fathers hunger for revenge. I would have only let him tell Hamlet that he was murdered by his uncle, to be a smart prince and act carefully. Then Hamlet would have carried out the play to prove the words of his father’s ghost. After knowing that he was told the truth, he would have looked into every detail of the day of his father’s death. He would have tracked down how the King (his uncle) got the poison in the first place. Then he would have taken the throne as a wise King, not led by grief and revenge. That would have showed the people that he was going to be a good ruler.

What causes the character’s ultimate downfall?

What really brought Hamlet’s downfall was in my opinion because he often the idea of dying very often, “To be, or not to be? That is the question—Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,” (3.1.57-60). He thought about what was worst, living with troubles or being dead and not knowing what dead was like. He struggled with being contempt even though his circumstances were absolutely a mess. He could have tried to get passed them, he could of stopped the craziness when he made his mother realize what she had done. To have these thoughts, you must really don’t care if you cause harm to others.

Does the character have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset?

In the play Hamlet has a growth mindset. In Act I the ghost tells Hamlet “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life, Now wears his crown” (1.5.39-40.)That meant that his father was murdered by his uncle. With that information Hamlet does not act upon that information right away. The young prince knew that his judgment over situations like these could be blinded because of his pain and grief. He then plans to have a play in which a scene is similar to what the ghost told him. ”There is a play tonight before the king. One scene of it comes near the circumstance Which I have told thee of my father’s death. I prithee, when thou seest that act afoot, Even with the very comment of thy soul Observe mine uncle. If his occulted guilt Do not itself unkennel in one speech, It is a damnèd ghost that we have seen, And my imaginations are as foul ” (3.2.70-78) The play was a way to test the credibility of what the ghost had told him.

Why do you think the character acts the way he or she does?

I think Hamlet acts the way he does because he has no other choice. His father died, his uncle marries his mother recently after the funeral, then a ghost who appeared to be his father told him that he was murdered by his uncle. All of that is a lot to take in. Plus, to top it all off, they are royalty, he is a prince , his mother and uncle are king and queen. He acts the way he does because his situation is very messed up, unfortunately he cannot see the good in anything. This is demonstrated when he says to Horatio “I pray thee, do not mock me, fellow student./ I think it was to see my mother’s wedding.” (1.2.76-77).
