Where is it produced?
adipose cells (fat tissue)

Target Organ
Leptin is secreted into the bloodstream and targeted for the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls appetite. It binds to Leptin receptors and causes a reduction in appetite.

Function
Leptin is used to keep body fat to a narrow and optimal range. Animals with more adipose tissue in their body will have a higher leptin level in their bloodstream in order to slow food intake and limit obesity. Underweight people have a limited amount of adipose tissue, which encourages food intake.
Often times obese people aren't obese as a result of a lack of leptin secretion, but rather because of resistance to the chemical in the hypothalamus.

Melatonin is:
Produced and secreted by pineal gland (in darkness)
High at night (dark) and low at day (light) to control of our circadian rhythm that follows a 24-hour cycle

Targets: hypothalamus, pituitary and other glands, kidneys, immune system

Receptor cells in the back of the retina send a message first to group of cells in anterior hypothalamus, then to the pineal gland. This message tells the gland when it is dawn and when it is dusk.

The pineal gland adapts melatonin concentrations in the blood to match a 24-hour cycle. It also helps to control other processes involved in helping us sleep, such as lowering our core temperature and decreasing urine production.

When melatonin is high = time for bed (we become sleepy)
When melatonin is low = time to wake up (we become more alert)
