When you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the outcomes–you alone or you in concert with a few dozen or several million others. Hope is an embrace of the unknown and knowable, a alternative to the certainty of both optimists and pessimists. Optimists think it will all be fine without our involvement; pessimists take the opposite position; both excuse themselves from acting. It’s the belief that what we do matters even though how and when it may matter, who and what is may impact, are not things we can know beforehand.

A show which emphasises both the emotional and physical challenges that working in Emergency Medicine brings: the life-and-death situations that medical staff are challenged with everyday, both at risk of their patients' health and safety and their own. 

In this episode, one of the hospital's more senior directors, Ms. Goodwin, also a friend of the ER staff, is caught in an accident with a young boy. When she discovers that his collision with her car resulted in a life-altering head trauma, the preciousness of preserving life impresses upon her and she obsesses over how to restore as much of the boy's life as possible at the expense of her own. She even foregoes all legal procedures, which have been established as one of core principles. This episode serves as a tribute to understanding how much pain humans are willing to experience when our rights to 'future time' are threatened.
