The utopia Jonas lives in values obedience. Obedience helps to keep everyone safe because you never know when something will go wrong. They also value kindness and acceptance because apologies are always accepted.

Chapter 3: Apple

The perfect utopia has good and sweet moments of life. But, is it really perfect? The game of catch between Jonas and Asher is not good and it related to bruising an apple, and it also relates to the bitter core of an apple because the utopia can always have its bad times and that is like the bitter core of an apple because you always enjoy eating your apple and getting the juicy sweetness but then when you get to the bitter core of the apple, then it gets really bad and isn't so perfect anymore.

Some of the rules are harsher for children while some rules are harsher for adults because when Jonas had a dream and had a feeling of wanting and it was known as his first stirrings. Since the utopia forbidden feelings of love, if the children get that feeling, then they have to take pills that prevent stirrings and get rid of stirrings and it is really harsh for the children.

The Receiver's House is different from other houses in the community because the house has locks on the doors and no house in the community ever had locked doors and the Receiver can turn of the speakers. The reason why the Receiver's House has these things and the other houses in the community don't is because the locks and the ability to turn off the speaker insure the Receiver's privacy because he needs concentration.

Transmitting Memories

The process of transmitting memories happens by when Jonas lies down on his stomach without his tunic on and the Giver puts his hands on his back and he transmits the memories to him. The first memory that Jonas receives is the memory of snow, the cold, and a snow ride. He says that the at first it's exhilarating, the speed, the sharp, clear air, but then he says the snow accumulates and builds up on the runners and you slow down and push hard.

This quote means that Jonas thought that there was only us and his community and not the whole world around him. It's not just his community, it is elsewhere too. There is much more than just his community and there's all that goes beyond. This is not a good way to live because their parents lied to them and they were living in lies because they always told them that they were the only good utopia

Jonas is surprised when the Giver turns off the speaker and locks the door because no other community house can do that except the Receiver's house. I can infer that the normal citizens in this world, privacy doesn't really exist in their personalities because they are like the same and no privacy is needed except for Jonas.

The Giver

The title The Giver is the best title for this book. This is the best title for the book because almost everyone in the community is given something. For example, when you turn one, at the Ceremony of One, you get named and you get a family. At the Ceremony of Nine, when you turn nine, you are given a bike so you can travel around the community on a bicycle. At the Ceremony of Twelve when you turn twelve, you are given and assigned an assignment and a job and you turn into an adult. Finally, Jonas receives and is given memories that he has never had before.
