Slang means using words in an informal way to express emotions. In the 1930s, slang was different from now. For example, boys who take their girls out for a date might call them their "hot patooties".

I finds this interesting because today's slang is very different. It's more vulgar and more personal. Somehow less fun.

President Herbert Hoover did not do much to alleviate the crisis. At that time, China was having a civil war and people were living poor lives; Most people did have radios–and listening to the radio was free. The most popular broadcasts were those that distracted listeners from their everyday struggles: comedy programs like Amos ‘n’ Andy, soap operas and sporting events. People live in China watched traditional opera at that time.
