This extravagant atmosphere was visible in almost every style of entertainment which originated in the place, and yet the houses many locals lived in, failed to show that same fantastic enthusiasm which many scholars fantasized about. WEB DuBois, famous African-American civil-rights activists, went on to describe just how disordered the houses were. He told stories of how crowded the tenements were, how there was no privacy, and how there were even places for public commercial "relief."
