We are taken into the world of a young child and how she overcame the obstacles of her early years of being deaf in the 70s/80s. It's an inspiring tale that shows how perseverance and courage can go a long way.

Teaching Idea = This book can be a great teaching idea on inclusion, and how everyone is different in their own unique way and we need to be accepting of that. Everyone may have their own "El Deafo". In the book, the main character went through a lot of feelings of isolation, and how certain people befriended her and impacted her life with kindness. By reading this book allowed in class, or even in groups the teacher can teach a lesson on how befriending others or even complimenting them on something, can make their day and even yours.

We hear from a perspective of young Frannie and her world, which includes her deaf brother, her loving mama, best friend Stephanie, and a new kid they call "Jesus boy" we grow with Frannie as she encounters new things in her life, and how a little kindness towards someone can go a long way.

Teaching Idea = For this book I feel a good teaching idea would be students can write down things when they remember they were the new kid, such as the first day of kindergarten or changing schools. They should write about how they felt and if there was anyone who stood out to them and took the time to become their friend. This teaches inclusion, and how everyone comes from different backgrounds.
