Martin Luther King Jr is probably the most important catalyst for social change in the United States since the Civil War. The day of this posting marks the fiftieth anniversary of his death so it felt right to use an article that talked of his movement and how it relates to today. The article I used for our online discussion talks of the battle that he once fought continuing on. His death sparked riots all over the nation, as we have seen with the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, while his messages have inspired countless protests from LGBTQ marches to the gun violence protests we are seeing nationwide as I type. His own death sparked rethinking of gun laws, by the time of his death he was doing more than protesting for racial equality, he was attempting to help poor Americans all over, protest the Vietnam War, and move his civil rights movement to the Northern U.S. He was a true pioneer in peaceful protesting in America and although his life ended fifty years ago, his message lives on today.

As you read the article, the question I pose to you is this. Do you think that the same problems we saw then, specifically racism, are still an issue today? What do you think MLK Jr would say about todays protests? Whether it be about gun violence or marriage rights.
