Today I learnt a new editing skill at home in after effects. It is how to make HD footage into old, retro/ vintage. vas footage. It look really cool and I will definitely use this in my FMP. It is very easy. You just have to create some movement with in the footage to make it look raw and nasty. Then you have to create a wave going down the screen by using an adjustment layer. Then you have to make it race with the layer of text not only just the video. This is done within the effect settings within after effects. Finally you have to break up the rgb channels and it gives it a nice, significant change which makes it look complete.
Below is the evidence of me doing it.

Today I made a huge dent in my 'paper work' for the fmp. I want to get most of it done so I can just film and play around with its editing for a longer period. This has made me realise that it is so easy to bang out and go through it afterwards adding detail. I think I have covered most aspects and just have the last half of my detailed research left and also the pre-production for my final shoot.
In general, I am looking forward to the final shoot as it will let me show off my editing techniques I have learnt over the base of this course. This is going to be a good project to work on.
I am just stuck on one art of this FMP in which is the classification of the project. People are knowing wether it is a film, documentary or music video, ect. I am not really sure. I have just been saying a creative travel video as I want fancy shots and fancy editing in an interesting place. I dont know whether to call it a shortchanged film or a music video or if it actually is a travel video but I'm pretty certain that they have facts on the screen with the footage. I think that I will keep this in mind and get shots that suit my original idea and then also for a travel video so that the image is on the screen long enough for facts to go on the side.
I am also struggling on the song choice as it is not on youtube, just Spotify, apple music and sound cloud premium. I will keep a look out and an ear out for any other possible songs.

Today I have finished up most of the work outstanding and am just left with the pre-production work and still the last half of the research. Im just not motivated to finish it just yet.
In terms of editing techniques, I have been watching a lot of editing tutorials when I can't sleep. They are keeping my mind open for this final shoot and inspiring me to get certain shot types and angle to re create some of these crazy affects, but maybe not. Generally speaking, I am really open to ideas ever since the inspiration research. A lot of people are very inspiring, not to the point where I will copy their style but just think more about styles and traits I can carry through my work. It is definitely going to impact my work and how it will finally be shown.
Below is one of my techniques I will plan to be using in my next, upcoming FMP project. I believe it will be a great asset to the video

This visual diary, is of visual diaries. Today Delta informed us that some of our visual diaries are not good enough. She showed us how to write them, what to include and how to upload/title them.
This will definitely improve the standard of my diaries as I definitely slip up on this side of the work. To improve, you just have to follow these steps:
1. Describe what you have completed that day and what you have learnt.
2. How did the activities improve your skills? Give examples.
3. What problems did you face and how did you solve them? Give examples.
4. What new techniques did you learn or improve? Give examples and justify.
5. What improvements did you need to make as a result? Give examples.
6. What skills have you used/learnt that you plan to apply into your work next session.

I will definitely use these skills and questions in the future. I feel like it has also woken me up in terms of completing my diary entries and also keeping loyal and consistent to them. This will definitely improve my work and grade.

I have been playing around with other programmes such as photoshop. This is going to help me with thumbnails and other aspects of my video. I unfortunately did something with the settings and the files corrupted. I think that this was due to layers and other parts being invisible but it does not matter as it did not take too long and also can be made again easily.

Today was my final shoot day. All of my research and skills are now being put to the test.
We started the day by going to epping train station and meeting up. We then got a train to bank and then to Blackfriars. We then traveled to embankment where we started to film and the photos. I started by taking some shots under a bridge by the river. This proved to be hard to get the correct exposure and seen as though it was my first time with my new camera and also the amount of light from the other side wasn't working in hand with the darkness we were in acting like a silhouette almost. I did the best I Ould and we moved on to other various spots along the river. We got to the skatepark by the river. There were some skaters which will give my video something out of the box. We then crossed the bridge and travelled o Camden. This resulted in seeing weird people, weird trends and weird shops. I even experienced my first mixtape offering. I didn't have any change so I didn't get to hear the flame. My camera unfortunately died so we got something to eat, wen to Starbucks and continued half hour later. We continued to walk around and then got back on a train to Liverpool Street and just explored places like the gherkin and the Liverpool train station. On the way home, I filmed some creative and artsy shots.
I feel like not only did I have fun, but I learnt some new skills. This will make me understand exposure due to some issues I faced when in the editing software.
As soon as I got home, I started to edit my video. I threw out my original 2 song choices out the window when on the train home, watching some youtube videos, I heard a new one. This song is called ' Surfing - Hit the spot. ' This song has a retro kinda vibe I was wanting. As I begun to edit, I couldn't stop and by the time of 2am, I had almost completed my first rough edit. This has now been some what improved but also has a contender. A day or two after, I made another edit with a song I had found on my youtube liked playlist. It was an instrumental of a song called ' Rain ' by Mac Miller. This song has a modern beat which is Bassey and also jumpy so I can edit quickly to it. This didn't take as long as the other edit seen as though I had already sorted the clips out.
I am now stuck on which one to use as I like both but each have their ups and downs.
First of all, I like Hit the spot as it has a nice slow beat which allows my shots to be on the screen for longer. The other edit is quite the opposite with fast cuts and transitions. I also like the way some of the shots create a story line and fit with the melody of the song. This does happen with the other song but I like it more with the other. The downside of hit the spot is the way it is hard to add effects and cool transitions. If I choose the rain instrumental, I will commit to it and add a whole bunch of techniques.
I will further inform of choices.

I completed a lot of work today at home. I started to get some of the clips and their timing correct in the timeline. This took a while but has made it easier for me in the long run. Seen as though I can now just focus on the new clips that are added. I also made the audio shorter by cropping some of the end off, and then seamlessly adding the last cut of the ending of the song onto the middle which I intend to use. This took a while but has made the video shorter and slightly better.
The next day, I added the rest of the clips in and now the timeline is complete. All I have to add now is the effects to the clip that I have planned on adding in the editing planning phase. This will include various vhs effects and also other effects to enhance the viewing experience.

Visual Diary 8 - Final Diary Entry / Evaulation

My Fmp is based around with things I had liked around the time of shooting this and planning for this. I was watching a lot of V-logs ( Video Logs ) and they all had cinematic sequences in the middle. Not long but very Impacting. I feel that I wanted to reproduce this and i got started in the planning phases.
I started by doing some research of some editing and uses of video to song that inspired me and which i would like to reproduce. I looked at 2 music videos with trendy editing techniques such as liquefying certain aspects of the screen to cool swipey transitions and also 2 creative short, video log video. This definitely helped me choose what i wanted to include in my video. I wrote a brief summary and a description of what they've used and posted it with the video.
The music videos helped me create an idea of how to/ when to transition from one clip to the other. I looked at modern videos with effects I aspire to. This also made me branch out to tutorials to get a feel on how to go about filming for techniques and also how to do the techniques themselves. On the other hand, the video logs that I decided study helped me think of how to structure my video and also where to draw the line with effects. This also made a huge impact with my work as I could see a wide variety of videos and how they all had their own special qualities.
I also did some research on how to shoot videos with dslr's although this isn't documented, I now have a better idea on how to shoot and the correct manual settings to shoot so it is not grainy nor pixilated.
I then went on to location briefs, song choices and also editing techniques. When doing so, i should have taken into more consideration into planning my shots as i was not able to use one of my desired transitions as my clip didn't fit the way the edit worked. Looking back into previous tasks, i definitely did this quicker, I'm not sure if it is down to wanting to film bad or just wanting to get through it but i did notice a little more detail than in the past terms tasks.

My pre-production was next. I decided to add as many boxes as i could to be able to make a detailed idea of what will happen if it goes right, if it goes bad and what ill be doing. I think that this helped me when filming as i didnt need to worry about those small, little things.

When filming, i decided to use proportions to create the scene a little better. I used rule of thirds, mid shots and also many other shots like long shots. I think that this mixed up the video a little bit and i liked that. I made sure that my shots were as stable as possible unless purposely shaky just like the security camera part. I think that this adds something unique to the video as if it were all to be still shots, it would be boring in my opinion. I decided to make a video going into detail about how and why i used my editing effects. You can find this on showbie somewhere where Dave uploaded it. I think that this has given my ideas across verbally which is sometimes easier than typing. Without going into that detail again, i will just explain a few things.
First up, the VHS effect. I wanted to use this so that it would make my video different and also pleasing to the eye. I've wanted to use it for ages. I started by getting my clip. Then i got an adjustment layer and made a glitch line that traveled up the screen as VHS footage sometimes has. Then i added noise (grains). I then went to copying the video 3 times all with rgb splitter on and then changed there settings and combined them. Then i downloaded a VHS overlay which consists of marks, squiggles and line flashing across the screen and this was the cherry on the cake if you will.
I also used various cuts that synced with the beat. This is done by just finding where the beat/snare/high hat starts and then cutting on that line. This will result in cutting with the beat and is useful to know.

Looking back at my planning, iv'e always needed to improve and this is the result again. I needed to plan my shots out. I say this now but when planning, due to my video style, it was almost impossible to plan otherwise it would have been a scavenger hunt around London. My shots were supposed to be random encounters that i faced among London. This is why i left that sort of bland, but i gave myself the general idea of what i would be shooting that day.

My final piece of work compared to my visions were definitely very similar. In pre-production, i wasn't sure if my idea would work but in post editing i was amazed that it did, Three times almost. I made 3 edits and the one you have possibly seen is the one i stuck with, below will be another edit i had made. If i could have changed it, i would have made something else with a story line. Possibly a short horror movie or a music video. Im not too sure, But im happy with the way my video came out. It portrayed my day in which i enjoyed so much with the people i had fun with.

I personally think my deadlines were met. I always keep them in the back of my mind just so i am aware what days i have to be down by so i dont fail. I think i could have maybe stuck closer with the assignment sheet so i could have made more detailed answers to some tasks but that will be a new resolution for my up and coming work.

I personally think that the strengths of my work was the filming and editing and the weakness was the planning.
I just seem to rush my work to be able to get practical work done and then go back over it, but going back over it isn't always the best idea. This will change in my next terms work and you will see for sure. I also wasn't that clear with planning and neat. I need to organize it a little better as well so it is not as hard to find for the teachers. This will also be a new resolution.

Below is the second video i made, well first, but the second to air. You know what I mean:
