At first, he can find food in the fields, but when he passes them, he starts to starve, because there is no more food in the land. He and Gabriel then ride into the snow, and Jonas has a lot of trouble getting up a snowy hill because he is cold, numb, hungry, and loosing consciousness. ( Page 222, new book)
