During the invasion, tanks came into the nation of Poland and destroyed roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, telegraph stations, and airfields. This form of warfare is so iconic for the invasion because the Nazis were able to easily destroy anything, buildings, transportation, even lives, within a matter of moments.

Dive bombers are airplanes that dropped bombs on cities that they fly over. These planes created intense fear for Polish citizens because there were constantly German forces flying overhead, and it was never known when your house may be destroyed by a bomb. As well as the bombings, planes would fly over fields and shoot workers who were trying to pick crops in order to keep their families alive through the tough times. According to Bryan, the workers went back to the fields knowing that "even if they dug, they might be machine-gunned, but if they didn't, that they would surely starve."

A sense of hopelessness overcame the people of Poland, as well as that of anger and fear. Julian Bryan describes them as "helpless civilians" and "the faces of a nation deceived." The Polish began to lose hope of survival through the treacherous times of the invasion. With troops marching through the streets, and the risk of bombs threatening their lives, it was difficult for the Polish to flee or find safety. Hopelessness is a huge factor in the invasion because it was an emotion felt throughout the nation.

Normally one is able to look up at the sky during any time of day and be mesmerized by what they're seeing. In the case of the invasion of Poland, Polish people did not have that same delight when they looked up at the sky. At any moment when they look up, there could have been German planes, smoke from fires, or even debris from bombings. Looking up at the sky became a terrifying action, defining the fear that occurred throughout the invasion of Poland, threatening lives and mentally scaring civilians.

Due to the fact that the country was going through times of disaster, citizens would stand in line every day to receive their food rations. These lines were a matter of life or death because one could either get their rations for the day or be killed by an airstrike while waiting in line, as described by a woman in "Siege," produced by Julian Bryan.

According to Julian Bryan's film "Siege," every night at 5:30 pm, German planes would fly over cities in Poland and drop incendiary bombs which would result in the destruction of homes and lives. Fire plays such a big role in the invasion of Poland because one wouldn't know whether they would come home to their house or to a pile of ashes. Physically and mentally scarring, fire is one of the most dangerous elements and the German's used it wisely against the Polish in order to conquer their territory.

Borders clearly define the separation of territories or lack thereof. The Polish borders were overtaken and ruined as the Nazis began to invade Poland. Borders that distinguish Poland as its own nation were destroyed, resulting in a destruction of the Polish people's sense of self. Throughout the invasion, Poland lost it's identity as a nation, and just became a space that the Germans were occupying. Creating both fear and hopelessness, the destruction of borders was the first step in the invasion of Poland.
