In the early 18th century, the thirteen American colonies were part of the vast British Empire. Though they were spread along the Atlantic coast, each colony had its own government, economy, and way of life.

Still, most colonists saw themselves as loyal subjects of the British Crown. They spoke English, followed British laws, and even fought alongside British soldiers in the French and Indian War (1754–1763).

But everything started to change after that war ended. Britain had won, but at a great financial cost. To recover from its debts, Parliament decided to raise money by taxing the colonies—without asking them. Suddenly, colonists were expected to pay taxes like the Stamp Act and the Tea Act, even though they had no representatives in the British Parliament. To many, this was a betrayal. They believed they deserved the same political rights as any other British citizen.

The tension grew. At first, there were petitions and peaceful protests. But when the British government ignored these, resistance became more direct—and more dangerous. In 1770, British soldiers opened fire on a group of unarmed colonists in what became known as the Boston Massacre, an event that shocked and angered many. Just a few years later, in 1773, a group of rebels dressed as Native Americans boarded British ships and dumped an entire cargo of tea into Boston Harbor.

This bold act, known as the Boston Tea Party, was more than just a protest against taxes—it was a clear sign that many colonists were no longer afraid of challenging British authority.

The American Revolution began in April 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord. These first fights showed that the colonies were ready to resist British control. Soon after, the Second Continental Congress met and chose George Washington to lead the Continental Army.

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, which said that the colonies were free from Britain. It was signed on July 4, a date that Americans still celebrate today. But winning independence was not easy. The British army was strong and captured cities like New York. Washington’s soldiers often lacked food and supplies, and many feared they would lose.

Things changed in 1777, when the Americans won the Battle of Saratoga. This victory convinced France to help by sending soldiers, ships, and money. With French support, the Americans were stronger.

Finally, in 1781, Washington and the French trapped the British army at Yorktown, Virginia. British General Cornwallis surrendered, and this was the last major battle. The war officially ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris, and the United States was finally independent.
