But then there came a point when I just stopped resisting."
- Identifies how important Hailsham was/is, and how big of an influence it had on its students, especially Kathy.

Character Development:
Kathy, the narrator of the book, can be easily described as a very observational and kindhearted person. Though Tommy is seen as an outsider to everyone else, she takes notice in him, and is the one person who truly realizes the changes that he has gone through.

Conflict:
- Tommy often bursts into tantrums that he con not control, which creates conflict in his social life/respect from his peers.

Theme: Adolescent Struggle
Tommy can be described as a character who struggles very much with his confidence and ability to fit in with the other children. The theme is developed as he, along with Kathy, trudge on through their hard times at Hailsham.

Important Quotes:
"I've grown up a bit I suppose. And maybe everyone else has too. Can't keep on with the same stuff all the time. Gets boring."

Character Development:
- Tommy, primarily being characterized as an outsider, has now begun to make friends at Hailsham and accommodates himself into having a more normal adolescent life.

Conflict:
Kathy describes how Tommy was consistently left out and humiliated by the other boys at the school. We, the readers, are immediately made aware of the conflict in which Tommy and the other children at Hailsham have, regarding the bullying of Tommy for years to come.

Theme: Growing up/maturing
A theme of learning to grow up, and mature have taken place thus far, as seen when the narrator questions the character Tommy, asking him about the changes that she has noticed about him.
- "Sometimes I could see he was close to it, but he somehow controlled himself; other times he'd quietly shrug, or react like he hadn't noticed a thing."

Important Quotes:
"Ruth had been right: Madame was afraid of us. But she was afraid of us in the same way someone might be afraid of spiders."
"What she was talking about was, you know, about us. What's going to happen to us one day. Donations and all that."

Character Development:
The reader is introduced to the new, more mature, Tommy, as he explains his sort of "awakening." Character development is also seen as Madame is brought into the story and explained to be someone who is scared of the students - hinting at a sort of foreshadowing in a hidden truth, yet to be told.

Conflict:
The girls at Hailsham try to uncover if Madame is truly scared of them, and when they discover their truth, they are surprised in how they feel. Conflict regarding how the narrator remembers both the character Madame, and the Gallery create a sense of conflict in how they correlate to the relevance of the story.

Theme:
A theme of wonder and curiosity is brought about in this chapter. This can be seen as Kathy and Tommy struggle to uncover the truth behind Ms. Emilys true intentions of her talk with Tommy.

Important Quotes:
"We were, I'd say, as curious as ever about her, but we all sensed that to probe any further - about what she did with our work, whether there really was a gallery - would get us into territory we weren't ready for yet."
"I remember feeling furious at Polly for so stupidly breaking the unwritten rule, but at the same time, being terribly excited about what answer Miss Lucy might give."

Character Development:
In this chapter, the narrator primarily focuses on Miss Emily, allowing for the reader to have a better understanding of her characters role. She is the head guardian, and has an intellect as sharp as a blade.

Conflict:
The brief and simple conflict that occurs within this passage is when a student, by the name of Polly, asks one of the guardians why Madame takes their belongings to a "gallery." This is something that students do not talk about among their guardians, and it brings about the internal conflict within the narrator and other students as they do not know if they should be angry at Polly, or excited about the answer they have all been wondering to hear.

Theme:
The theme of curiosity is once again seen throughout this chapter. In regards to Miss Emily and the reason behind the taking away of the students prized possessions, the reader becomes very aware of the deeper meaning behind all that is going on at Hailsham. This creates a deep sense of wonder and curiosity that is held throughout the chapter as a whole.

Important Quotes:
"She'd done something really embarrassing to us during the day - we chose to punish her by hauling her out of bed, holding her face against the window pane and ordering her to look up at the woods."
"All this effort, all this planning, just to upset my dearest friend."

Character Development:
Chapter 5 allows for the reader to see a more raw side of Ruth, and how cruel she really is. Kathy explains how Ruth lies about a pencil case, but this lying intertwines with the true character of Ruth, being manipulative and hurtful.

Conflict:
In regards to Ruth, Kathy engages herself in an internal conflict, as she accuses Ruth and tries to prove her she was lying. There is also a sense of conflict as Ruth implies that Miss Geraldine has been favoring her over the other students.

Theme:
A theme of jealousy and untruthfulness is seen in this chapter. Ruth attempts, and to a certain degree succeeds, at making others jealous of her - through her untruthfulness.

Important Quotes:
"But now, in that gallery, the woman was too close, much closer than we'd ever really wanted. And the more we heard er and looked at her, the less she seemed like Ruth."
"We all know it. We're modeled from trash. Junkies, prostitutes, winos, tramps. Convicts, maybe, just so as long as they aren't psychos."

Character Development:
Ruth can be seen as having a more upfront and aggressive reaction than usual. After finding that this woman was not her "possible" she goes onto attack Tommy and say how they were all modeled from trash, disposable people.

Conflict:
There is a lot of hostility occurring between the characters in this chapter. Ruth tries to conform to what she thinks the veterans view as "cool" or "worthy," and in turn, wedges a bit of gap between the group - Ruth with veterans, and Tommy and Kathy.

Theme:
A theme of disappointment and sadness is seen in this chapter, as the characters, in a sense, wasted their time in trying to find this woman who ended up not being anything to them. Ruth is the most disappointed and upset by this, but her attitude affects Kathy and Tommy, making the theme all the more evident in being dull and sad.

Important Quotes:
"But the fact was, I suppose, there were powerful tides tugging us apart by then, and it only needed something like that to finish the task."
"It wasn't long after that U made my decision, and once I'd made it, I never wavered. I just got up one morning and told Keffers I wanted to start my training to become a carer."

Character Development:
Kathy, in a sense, goes through another instance of maturing - realizing what she needs to do in figuring out her future. She distances herself from Ruth and Tommy, and takes the first steptowards her chosen future - leaving to become a carer.

Conflict:
A slight conflict occurs in this chapter as Kathy, Ruth and Tommy act as though nothing happened in the churchyard that day. Although Ruth and Kathy briefly talk about it near the end of the chapter, that day was what mainly untied the friendship of the three and made way for their parting paths.

Theme:
A theme of change and separation is seen in this chapter, as the three main characters begin to stop talking to each other and their intimacy begins to die down. This is the first instance in which Rut, Tommy and Kathy truly begin to part ways - both in their friendship, and in their futures.

You grow up surrounded by crowds of people, that's all you've ever known, and suddenly you're a carer."
"But once I officially became her carer, and I began to see her regularly, the sense of something not being right grew stronger and stronger."

Character Development:
In this chapter, the plot jumps to where Kathy is officially a carer, and Tommy and Ruth have become donors. All have gone through a lot of change, as they are living out their futures/destiny's that they have always been set to do.

Conflict:
Kathy, at first, does not think she would be a good fit to be Ruth's carer. Eventually however, after meeting up with Ruth and having conversations, she properly becomes her carer.

Theme:
A theme of major change and following ones destiny is seen in this chapter. Kath, I think I ought to get a different carer."
"The memories I value most, I don't see them ever fading. I lost Ruth, then I lost Tommy, But I won't lose my memories of them."

Character Development:
Tommy shows a sort of vulnerability that the reader has never seen of him. He tells Kathy that he doesn't want her to see him in the state that he will be in after his fourth donation. Both Kathy and Tommy develop a feeling of knowing that their end is near, and have become aware and accepting of the fact.

Conflict:
Kathy and Tommy discuss Tommy's fourth donation, creating a bit of conflict in their relationship. Since he asked for a new carer, their relationship, according to Kathy, seemed to have been different.

Theme:
A theme of totality and conclusion is seen in this chapter, as each character is given a sort of ending - one that summarizes their being altogether. Tommy and Ruth are concluded to have completed in their donations, and Kathy is finally given her notice to become a donor.

Or to put it more finely, we did it to prove you had souls at all."
"Before that, all clones - or students, as we preferred to call you - existed only to supply medical science. In the early days, after the war, that's largely all you were to most people."

Character Development:
Miss Emily is given a large role in this chapter, one that grows her character in multiple aspects. She explains to Tommy and Kathy a great number of the mysteries at of Hailsham, leading to the development of her character to be seen as someone who truly cared for the students. She appears to be someone who genuinely wanted more for them, wen everyone else was afraid of the idea of their existence.

Conflict:
Tommy struggles to understand the idea that there is no deferral, and his thoughts about the gallery were incorrect.

Theme:
A theme of coming to terms and being enlightened is most clearly seen in this chapter. Miss Emily explains a great deal of the mysteries of Hailsham and the story as a whole, providing the reader with a sense of understanding at last.
