Vasari's father and grandfather were both potters, so he followed the tradition and became an artist. However, he became a painter and started drawing. As a young boy, Giorgio Vasari worked under his great uncle and improved his ability to draw and paint. Vasari would travel around and work with different artists. When he was in Florence, he worked hard with the Medici family. Vasari was supported by the Medici family throughout his artistic career. However, Vasari’s paintings that he did with his team of assistants often were criticized for many things, such as lacking color. This was why the Contemporary Schools that he had attended considered him to be more of an architect, rather than a painter.

(Britannica)
(Accesible Art History)

Giorgio Vasari's Two Books

Besides painting and being an architect, Giorgio Vasari is most known for writing his book Le Vite de’ più eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scultori Italiani, which translates to Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects. This book was first published in 1550, but it was greatly expanded in 1568. In this book, Vasari shares his views and his judgments, which were influential up until the present. He brought up many discussions about Italian Renaissance artists and wrote biographies about the greatest artists in his era and of the early stages of the Italian Renaissance. He even included a biography about himself at the end of this book. This book changes the way people view the history of Western art, and even though he was very biased towards his home city, Florence, this book was very influential towards many. Today, he is known as the father of art history.

(Britannica)
(Accesible Art History)
(Bergin and Speake)

In his book, Vasari had included the best artists in his era at the time, so artists from the Renaissance period followed Vasari’s book and took into consideration the judgments that he had made. Before Vasari shared his views, artists were distorting the Renaissance style and they were messing with the proportions. In the end, they were creating something very fake. With Vasari’s views of how great artists were using a different style while making it more elegant, many artists listened to Vasari’s views and improved their art.
(Britannica)
(Bergin and Speake)
(Accesible Art History)
</sub>
