The North Pole (Noa Grohar & Maayan Parsa)

The geographical area of the North Pole is called the Arctic. We all need to take action to prevent oil drilling at the North Pole. The producers of dirty energy, which caused the North Pole to melt in the first place, now want to gain from the ice disappearance. They want to open a new oil front to realize a potential of 90 billion barrels. For them, this is a huge fortune, but in the world, the oil produced there will suffice for only three years. Coping with oil leaks in frozen water is almost impossible, and unavoidable errors will completely undermine the fragile polar environment. To drill the North Pole, oil companies will have to drag glaciers to clear the way to drilling rigs and use huge water pipes with hot water to melt floating ice.

The Arctic, according to experts, is expected to become completely ice-free during the summer season by 2030 -according to its current melting rate and the temperatures measured in recent years.

The ice-free pole in the summer has serious consequences, less ice means less energy being returned from the huge white surfaces and therefore the global warming of the earth.

How can we save the North Pole?

You can sign The Greenpeace organization petition to save the North Pole, to show that our shared vision of a green and healthy Earth, a land of peace, depends on the protection of all of us on the North Pole. You can also join a demonstration against the companies or countries that support the oil drilling. Those are only a few examples for what we can do to save the North Pole. There are a lot of ways to save the North Pole. Together, we have stronger power than any army of a state and any corporate budget. Our shared concern for our Earth rise above all the boundaries that separate us and turns us into the strongest force that exists today. so if we all unite we can save the North Pole.

the volcanic islands of the Galápagos are located 600 miles west of continental Ecuador. They are famous for a wealth of unique plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. The Galápagos Islands were the source of Darwin’s theory of evolution and remain a priceless living laboratory for scientists today.
One of the species that's only found in the Galápagos Islands is the marine iguana. It has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to search for food in the sea, making it a marine reptile. The marine iguana is currently considered vulnerable by the IUCN.

Unfortunately, illegal fishing, non-native species and the demands of more than 160,000 tourists each year threaten this irreplaceable ecosystem and the people who depend on it for their food and livelihood.
Furthermore, increased generation of waste creates pollution that threatens the Galápagos. An unknown number of animals are killed every year when they become entangled in pieces of string or plastic bags, or consume floating trash.

In conclusion, the Galápagos are an extraordinary, invaluable and due to our actions- dying ecosystem. It's our responsibility to stop illegal fishing, reduce pollution and ensure that the tourism in the Galápagos isn't harmful, or we'll lose one of the most beautiful places on Earth, forever.

Ronnie Ben Hanoch, Tamar Dayan, Poly and Noa Trabelsi
(210 words)

The turquoise blue water of this reef is home to some thousand species of fish including some of the most amazing in the world.
As a matter of fact only 10% of the reef has been researched, which means 90% of the reef hasn't been discovered yet. It covers an area of 250 km and is a spectacle to watch.
Despite the efforts to save the reef, it is still in danger of existence, mostly because of the destructive pollution and global warming.
The reef is vital to the fishing industry in Belize as well as it is to the whole world. And it also attracts a half of the tourist in Belize.
So what can we do to save it?
For starters we need to raise the awareness of the Belize Barrier Reef’s extinction by protesting or by posting advertisements on social media or even by raising money and sending it to organizations which support the Belize Barrier Reef.
To sum up we must do everything in our power to make sure the Belize Barrier Reef is here to stay!!!

The Amazon Rainforests (Liel Zang, Shir Ben Noach, Naama Reissman and Renana Meyer)

The Deforestation of The Amazon Rainforest

We would like to describe a very serious environmental problem: Deforestation.

Deforestation refers to the cutting, clearing, and removal of rainforests.

The Amazon rainforest covers most of the Amazon basin of South America. This place is over 7,000,000 square kilometers and includes countries as: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Most of the rainforests are in Brazil. The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests, with about 390 billion trees.

In the last several decades there is a phenomenon of deforestation of the Amazon rainforests because people need more and more places to live and trees to build houses.

Unfortunately, deforestation is a very serious environmental problem that endangers people all over the world.

First of all, deforestation endangers the different species of plants and animals that live in the forest. Millions of animals and plants will disappear because of the cutting of the trees.

Secondly, over a quarter of the medicines we are using today origin in the plants that grow in the Amazon. As a result of the deforestation, it would be impossible to extract the medicine from the extinct plants. Without this vital medicine, a lot of diseases could not be cured anymore, as medicine against malaria and HIV for example, and a lot of sick people will die.

In addition, most of our foods come out of the Amazon, such as: bananas, pineapples, nuts, coffee beans and many more. If deforestation continues, then we could be in a danger of cutting off a significant percentage of our food supply.

Finally, deforestation influences the amount of oxygen on Earth and endangers all the living species in the world including people.

To sum up, it is very important to save the rainforest because it has a huge impact on local economies and on the whole world.

Bibliography:

1. https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/7-reasons-to-save-the-rainforest/

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_rainforest

The Whale Haunting in Peru Island- Merav Kreindler, Rotem Hirshfeld, Hadar Finkelstein and Tamar Shorer

Every year the locals in Peru haunt between 750-950 whales in the area. This past month were held two haunting occasions with the support of CEO's of important whale's oil companies.
The islands are in the possession of Denmark, and although the whale haunting is forbidden by the law in Denmark, the law allows whale haunting for eating purposes.
The local people estimate that there are 8000 long finned pilot whales staying in this area today. The fishermen are looking for the whales for weeks but they are having problems finding them.
When the fishing boats find big schools of whales they lead them to the shore where the locals wait with sharp objects. Sometimes the fishermen are not able to drag the whales to the shore and brutally kill them in the water, an action that is not allowed by the law.
A lot of time the whales are being slaughtered by little kids whose watching and joining the deeds. The sea becomes red from all the blood. It is a terrible sight that has to be stopped.

The president of the organization that fights against the killing says that only with struggle in the field they could stop the old haunting whales tradition.
The organization don't know how long they will stay in the Peru Islands area, but they will do what they can to distance the schools of whales from the fishermen with a special under water acoustic equipment that will be installed soon. They claim that the police raided on the organization boat and since then they can't approach to the island.
We found the site important because animal abuse is a horrible thing and we support the fight against the murder and we need to raise awareness about the whale killing.
To sum up, the whales are very important and we need to save them.

Save the sea turtles 🐢

The greatest enemy of sea turtles today is humans. Most of the attacks on sea turtles in Israel occur unintentionally. The sea turtles were hunted in the past, and in the 1930s, during the British Mandate in Palestine, about 2,000 turtles were hunted every year in the coastal strip of the country. The sea turtles are mistakenly caught in fishing nets and hooks, getting tangled up and eating garbage in the sea and at the beach. They are hit by high speed boats such as motorboats and jet skis, and suffer from severe damage to their dumping sites.

The dumping sites are sandy beaches with easy access from the sea, along the entire coastline of Israel. The construction of marinas and breakwaters along the coast harms the flow of sand dunes to the north, resulting in an imbalance in sand dispersal of the beaches and the coastal strip is shrinking in areas where landings are laid. Many beaches are disturbed during the dumping season (by parties, unregulated overnight stays on beaches, lights and bonfires, lights coming from roads close to the sea, restaurants and even bonfires on the beach confuse newly hatched turtles and seek the light from the waves to find their way to the sea. On the beaches may damage the turtles and their nests and also create plumes in the sand where the young turtles fall and can not get out of them, intensive construction and accelerated development of the beaches caused severe damage to the dumping beaches.
Conservation efforts of sea turtles in Israel
The Nature and Parks Authority is the governmental body responsible for the preservation of nature in Israel, and as such is obligated to protect sea turtles. For this purpose, the Nature and Parks Authority established a national center for the rescue of sea turtles in 1999, where injured and damaged sea turtles are brought for treatment and rehabilitation, and the aim is to return them back to the sea. The declaration of beaches as nature reserves and national parks enables the protection of the coast over time from coastal construction, beach lodging during the laying season, etc. The Sea Turtle Rescue Center also has a breeding nucleus for the green turtle that is in serious danger of extinction in the Mediterranean Sea.

The army is on high alert and they attacked on Sunday at least four huliot launchers of kites.

We hope you enjoyed our article thank you very much!!!
Noa Schnider
Noa Friedman

The pollution in the Yarkon River started at the end of the 1950s when the cities around it started to grow, and they threw sewage and garbage into the river. To make things even worse, at the end of the 1950s the source water that had been going to the Yarkon started to be used for agriculture and drinking water, which left much less water for the river. Since then, the amount of water reaching the river has declined every year, which made it impossible to keep the river free of pollution.

In the 1960s and 1970s people became worried about the condition of the river and began to find ways to clean up the river. The Israel Water Authority created plans to clean up the river and today things continue to improve. The Mekorot Water Company is building water purification plants which will allow the water to be used for agricultural irrigation in the Ramat Hasharon area and even to water the grass in the Ganei Yehoshua park.

Information source: Haaretz, Wikipedia.

dHaifa Bay is the one of the largest bay on the Mediterranean coast in Israel. It is 12 kilometers long and it is located on the northern coastal plain of Israel. The Haifa Bay area is home to the industrial zone of Haifa and its vicinities. Because the industrial plants in this area produce chemicals that hurting the local residents, Haifa Bay has long been considered the most polluted area in Israel.

The results of this pollution are rates of hospitalization, sickness and mortality at levels higher than those of the national average in diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke and cancer. Haifa and its vicinities have a morbidity rate percent higher than the national average of cancer. Other results are respiratory diseases such as asthma, which is more common among children in Haifa Bay than in the rest of the country.

What can be done to reduce pollution from factories is to remove the risk factors from populated areas. One of the plans in advanced planning is the removal of a 12,000-ton ammonium storage tank from the Haifa Bay and the establishment of an ammonia production plant in southern Israel. The goal is to reduce the risks to the population from hazardous events.

We hope that the hazardous pollution will be taking care of by the right people in the next years and we want to raise our children in a cleaner environment.

235 words.
Bibliography: Wikipedia, Israel Environment Bulletin.

The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Southern Europe and Anatolia, on the south by North Africa and on the east by the Levant. Although the sea is sometimes considered a part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is usually identified as a separate body of water. It covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km2, but its connection to the Atlantic is only 14 km wide.

Pollution in this region has been extremely high in recent years. The United Nations Environment Programme has estimated that 650,000,000 tone of sewage, 129,000 tons of mineral oil, 60,000 tons of mercury, 3,800 tons of lead and 36,000 tons of phosphates are dumped into the Mediterranean each year. The Barcelona Convention aims to reduce pollution in the Mediterranean Sea and protect and improve the marine environment in the area, thereby contributing to its sustainable development. Many marine species have been almost wiped out because of the sea's pollution. One of them is the Mediterranean monk seal which is considered to be among the world's most endangered marine mammals

The Mediterranean is also plagued by marine debris. A 1994 study of the seabed using trawl nets around the coasts of Spain, France and Italy reported a particularly high mean concentration of debris; an average of 1,935 items per km2. Plastic debris accounted for 76%, of which 94% was plastic bags Countries located on the shores of the Mediterranean France Spain Italy Malta Monaco Montenegro Croatia Bosnia and Herzegovina Slovenia AB.

The average depth of approximately is 1500 meters below sea level.

Sources of information:
just for fun
britannica.com
wikipedia

THE KINNERET By Noga Geller, Michal Perelroth and Noa Kuperman Over the past years, the Kinneret has been drying out. The Kinneret, otherwise known as the sea of Galilee is located in Northern Israel and is the largest fresh water lake in Israel. It is approximately 53 km (33 miles) in circumference, about 21 km (13 miles) long and 13 km (8.1 miles) wide. It’s main water source is the Jordon River which flows through it from North to South. In the past, the Kinneret lake served as a major water source for Israel and today, only 2 percent of it’s water is pumped for use by Israel’s population. The Kinneret’s water height measurement is declining and is currently 210 meters below sea level. This makes it the lowest freshwater lake on earth. The closest cities surrounding the lake are Tiberias and Tel Katzir. Israel is a place where there is hardly any rain. People consume a lot of water in their daily lives and the Kinneret is running low as a water source. Therefore, Israel needs to find solutions to provide more water for it’s population. One such solution is a major project that Israel began 5 years ago called “desalination”. 700 million cubic meters of drinking water have been produced through this purification process. Another solution is encouraging people to change their way of life in terms of how they use water. Israel began a major campaign to make people aware of the important cause of saving water. The campaign’s aim is to persuade people to take action and limit the length of showers and usage of water. As we enter winter this year, we can only hope that Israel will have a steady rainfall that will fill the Kinneret and replenish Israel’s largest water reservoir and replenish Israel’s natural water supply.

The Dead Sea, the salty lake located at the lowest point on Earth, eight or nine times saltier than the oceans of the world is so dense and mineral rich that it doesn't even feel like normal water, more like olive oil mixed with sand.

The Dead Sea, one of the most popular tourist destinations, is best known for its special qualities. At a matter of fact, many people from all over the world to a vacation at the Dead Sea, passing their time between the Dead Sea Spa and visiting the unique hiking trails and attractions in the area.

The Dead Sea is going through rapid destruction. Most of the beaches are already closed for bathing, the water levels are continuing to fall, and entire areas are closed due to sinkholes. All these endanger the surrounding communities, the local infrastructure and the tourism.

WE HAVE TO FACE THE TRUTH THE DEAD SEA IS DESAPIRING!

One of the causes is a negligent policy that solves one problem but creates another: closing the Degania Dam to save the Sea of Galilee, which stalled the flow of water to the Dead Sea. Today only a fraction of the water that used to flow in the past arrives at the Dead Sea.

In addition, drought is one of the most devastating consequences of Climate Change. It reduces the flow of new waters into the sea.

The Dead Sea is in bad shape but there is still a chance to change this! We have solutions – we demand that the local governments take responsibility and rehabilitate the natural resource of the region:

Invest resources in rehabilitation. ●

Reduce industrial use of the sea. ●

●Renew a controlled flow of new waters into the sea.

To sum up, the Dead Sea is one of the most important and beautiful places in the world, and we have to take action before it will be too late.

NATURE BELONGS TO ALL OF US!!

Information Sources : BBC, GREEN COURSE,NUAE .

Presenters : Tamar, Noa and Avigail.

Disposable dishes are tools that are used once for a specific purpose for which they are intended and after use are thrown away.

Disposable dishes are made of plastic, a substance that pollutes the land, the air and landscape. This material is eaten by the animals and causes them to be wounded and infected. In addition, the poisonous material in plastic sometimes enter our drinking, poisoning the land and causing health problems.

Items made of plastic are usually designed for short-term use, so they quickly find their way to the trash and accumulate more and more. Unfortunately, plastic takes centuries to fade, so plastic is probably one of the only souvenirs that will remain on Earth in thousands of years.

The forecasts for the future are not optimistic. According to a recent study published in 30 years, we will produce four times as much plastic as we do today. In addition, the study indicates that 90 percent of the garbage in the sea is plastic.

There are two main solutions to the problem of using disposable dishes:

The first solutions is the use of tools made from non-plastic material.

The second solutions is to recycle the use of the disposable dishes

These solutions can be done by any of us. This requires public awareness. However, this awareness is not high today, and as a result, most of the plastic tools eventually find their way into the garbage.

presenter:
lea shalev
noga ben arush
zohar perets
shoham dolev

The Banias Waterfalls-Yaara Buda & Shani Berkovitz

The Banias waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Israel and is among the most important sites in Israel. It flows with a noise from a height of 10 meters to a beautiful pool surrounded by plants. You can look at the waterfall from a wooden balcony built by the Nature and Parks Authority. The Nature and Parks Authority also built a 100-meter-long trail that helps walk by the water.

And all this is only a small part of what needs to be done to keep the waterfall:

First, every day tourists pollute the water, which causes the danger of the waterfall that grows day by day. People who come to enjoy and admire the beautiful scenery at the end are destroying it. Second, all kinds of invasive plants are growing in the area, that interfere with the water flow and people need to uproot them. The problem is that there are not enough people that do it. In addition, because of the high temperature in Israel, it is necessary to maintain a constant low temperature of the water by cooling the water every day. This requires a lot of volunteers and efforts.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority has helped to preserve the waterfall, which is one of the largest tourist sites in Israel. But not only the Nature and Parks Authority should help but also you, because even such a large organization has limitations. There are no shortage of ways to help: from arriving as tourists and being careful not to dirty and contaminate the area, to volunteer in organizations or contribute to the preservation of the waterfall.

In conclusion, you have to work for this lovely waterfall if you want it not to be extinct. to volunteer at the Israel Nature and National Parks Protection Authority, to clean the place, donate money, raise money and do whatever you can. Anything small can help!

Environmental activists around the world are concerned from so many issues such as global warming, extincted species, oceans and desserts, but here, in our tiny country we have to take action and take care of our local unique nature treasures. So today, we want to tell you about the problem of one of those treasures - the dead sea's drying.

The Dead Sea is a salt lake between Israel and Jordan, considered the lowest place in the entire world. It is 306 meters deep, 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It is one of the world's first health resorts. The water contains 30 essential minerals, and the air has a high assemblage of oxygen, which helps to cure diseases such as asthma and arthritis.

Unfortunately, the water level is dropping about 1 meter and more every year.

Since the beginning of the measurements until 1997, The dead sea has lost almost 21 meters height, and about 400 skm from its area.

There are some reasons for it's drying up, but the main cause is that the factories around dry up the dead sea as a routine, in order to use it's resources.

What can we do to prevent irreparable damage or destruction and save the dead sea?

The most practical way is to stream new water to the dead sea. Although this process reduces the salinity of the water, it is better than losing the dead sea.

So to sum up, the dead sea is one of the wonders of the world, and have no substitute, and if it will be gone- we wouldn't have it's great profits, so together, we won't let the Dead Sea disappear. Let's save the dead sea!
