Grassroots Efforts in Tunisia to Advance Women’s Rights

Here is an article published on November 6, 2017, about teenage girls in Tunisia being taught politics normally only taught to males in that country: https://www.pri.org/stories/2017-11-06/grassroots-efforts-tunisia-advance-women-s-rights. This education is not approved by the Taliban, who despite not having physical presence in Tunisia, still have a degree of influence, so the education of girls in the nation is normally kept quiet. This is similar to Jameela secretly starting to learn the alphabet from Masood in chapter 7 of Wanting Mor. When she is discovered by her stepmother, she is not satisfied. She herself was most likely refused education due to her gender, and even she did not believe in female education due to the Taliban's impact on the Middle East.

By Luke.

Malala was a girl shot in the forehead by the Taliban for going to school. She has now become an activist against the ban not allowing girls to go to school. This girl persevered and now is learning school. In Wanting Mor, Jameela wanted to learn how to write her name, and when Masood helped her, her stepmother hated this. She hated this because Jameela would be smart and be able to do something else than cleaning the house and doing all the chores. The Taliban did not want Malala to learn school because she would become smart and know that what the Taliban was doing was wrong. Without school, she would not know what they were doing was wrong. Just like Malala, Jameela persevered and in the orphanage started to learn school. Overall, this story about Malala connects to the book through the theme of Malala and Jameela both becoming mentally stronger by persevering to go to school.

- Christian
