The ¨crowbar thing¨ talks about something that happened in San Diego. Basically talks about how a man got attacked by a crowbar for simply being Latino. Paul Flores expresses in his poem the problems with racial profiling. He is talking about how things and people are changing. He ends in a sarcastic way trying to get across that gentrification is not positive.

10. Flores wrote his poem to address the problems of gentrification in San Francisco’s
Mission District, the place where this recording was made. On November 4, 2016, Flores
performed “Crowbar Thing” with the Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble in Santa
Ana. Who does Flores seek to give voice to in his poem? Just as important, to whom
does he aim to speak?

Answer : He aims to speak to those people who are getting severally affected by gentrification that is going on in their city. What I thought about when hearing it I think Flores seeks to give voice to in his poems is the people that are losing what they once owned, Latinos that get judged and discriminated, people who get stereotyped without others not even getting to know them. He aims for everyone to open their eyes to what gentrification does and hear what are some consequences of what it causes and the damages it caused people.

11. Because the negative impacts of gentrification described by Flores are so
widespread, what should be done to combat them? Is poetry an effective form of
protest?

Answer : To combat the negative impacts of gentrification that are widespread they should do peaceful protests so that people can be aware of whats going on and that gentrification isn't only good but it has its negative impacts also. In my opinion poetry is an effective form of protest because it's not violent people can speak out of how they really feel about the situation and it raises awareness and people listen to what is going on and listen to the people that it has affected.
