As said by Cohen, P. R., & Levesque, H. J. (1991) teamwork is working in a pair or group to all achieve a common goal. Teamwork is a very effective way to reach a goal as the mixture of each individuals skills and strengths combine together all at once. I chose this competency to discuss as I believe being capable of working in a team is a key skill to obtain in life. I also observed a lot of great teamwork from the students on my two weeks of placement. Because of the nature of the students learning, in horticulture teamwork in a key component in their education.

As I mentioned in my first reflection my first practical ‘hands on’ class was with Paddy Smith. Paddy assigned his group of students to design and build a garden within the college campus. The students spent a couple of weeks designing the garden and then finally set out to start building the garden. The students began to spit themselves into small groups of four. They then set out as a class to gather their materials. When they had their equipment group one began to mix concrete and group two started to level the ground. Meanwhile, the other group started to lay the bricks bordering the garden. At the start of the task operations were running slow but with extra communication between the groups the pace started to pick up. It was fascinating for me and Paddy to observe how quickly the garden started to come along. Communication is a key part of teamwork but is also a skill some of the students lacked in, this is when the students with better communication skills stepped up to smoothen the running of the task. One student then noticed group two, which were levelling the ground started to become fatigued. This is when the idea of cycling the groups around arose.
