After reading the first part of Jeanette Wall's, "The Glass Castle," I have realized that Rex and Rose Mary are not such bad parents after all. Whenever Rex got a new job or had any type pf income he would always make sure to show his children a little fun. In the excerpt that I chose for this assignment Rex has just got a new job as an electrician and he takes the family out to a diner called The Owl Club. He always teaches his kids what he believes as the right things and I think that makes him a better father. He buys them treats and little toys that show them he cares. Although Rose Mary isn't as interactive with the kids in this excerpt, she does play a huge role in their childhood and both the parents complement each other in raising their kids. Besides the constant moving they are always there for their children and try their best to do good for them even if it docent always turn out that way.

Reading the assigned pages as a whole I indicate that Rex and Rose Mary walls have raised there kids differently from most .They let their kids do whatever they ,how they want and sometimes occasionally sort of abandon them .Part of the reason they live in poor conditions or have a lack of money is because Rex and Rose Mary don’t have stable jobs .Rex alcoholism affects the whole family ,from his drunken rages to spending all their money on alcohol .pg(62) “when we wanted money,we walked alongs the roadside picking up beer cans and bottles that we redeemed for two cents”Shows that the Wall’s children had to fend for themselves when it comes to hunger. But Rex and Rose Mary walls did make their children happy and made sure their relax by telling them they were going on a “adventure “.

Specific pages used- pgs. 9-14, 103, 116
Rex and Rose Mary Walls are special in within themselves, and with them put together they’re an interesting duo. Rose Mary is the one that gives the kid the little soft side that they have. She cares about their education and and acts as a nurse when needed. On pages 9-14 When Jeannette gets caught on fire when she was little her mother acted like any mother would and jumped to her aid and was concerned for her well being. When a school they were trying to attend were thinking of rejecting them she was the first to jump to their defense. Rex however is the more “if you’re not bleeding, throwing up, or dying... get over it” type of parent. He protects his kids and wife and compliments them when he feels. On page 103 when the pervert entered their house and sexually assaulted Jeannette, as soon as Rex found out he said “I’m going to kill that lowlife sonofabitch.” And then Jeannette, Brian and he went Pervert Hunting. He is the type of person to do anything for the people he loves. On page 116 he says in regard to asking Jeannette what she wants for her tenth birthday —“You know if it’s humanly possible, I’ll get it for you. And if it ain’t humanly possible, I’ll die trying.” They both love their kids but in special ways that we don’t see as often nowadays. Their kids are tough and more independent than most teenagers. They seem to be decent kids, even if they got hurt a few times along the way.

Judging Rose Mary and Rex Walls as parents is a difficult task. Do they do everything right? No, they don’t. If that’s the case, does that mean they do everything wrong? No, it doesn’t. The Walls family is much more complex than that. It’s not all black and white, and while I do believe that the good doesn’t and never will excuse the bad, I feel it’s equally as important to recognize what a parent does right and what they do wrong for the sake of their children.

The Walls parents are irresponsible. It’s good that they allow their children freedom, it’s only necessary that a child has some form of independence, but they take it too far. Rose Mary allows her daughter to cook by herself whenever she’s only three years old. This results in Jeannette being hospitalized for burns after the kitchen catches fire. Immediately afterwards, Rex takes her out of the hospital before she’s done recovering. They also let these children run around completely on their own whenever they’re hardly older than ten, something Jeanette talks about while they’re living in Battle Mountain. Not to mention that Rex repeatedly gets drunk around the children and lashes out violently towards Rose Mary right in front of them. That’s not to say Rose Mary isn’t irresponsible either. She lets flies and cockroaches swarm inside of her house, she won’t patch Jeanette up after she gets a bad gash in her knee in Battle Mountain, etc. To be a good parent you need to have some basic responsibility, something these two lack.

That being said, I’ve noticed there’s a certain level of self awareness within the Walls family. On page 116, Jeanette tells Rex that what she wants for her birthday is for him to stop drinking. He seems to sink into himself after she says this, and says she must be really disappointed in him. On page 69, Rose Mary has a breakdown upon discovering her children have resulted to eating margarine to keep themselves fed. She says she doesn’t like living like this, referring to their poor and unhealthy lifestyle. To me this self awareness feels like a glimmer of hope, like they could become better if they just did something about it. Maybe it’s the little things they do for their children, the things many would consider kind, that act as some sort of compensation for the horrible things they’ve done. How Rose Mary teaches Lori to paint, or how Rex lets his children “claim” stars. How they encourage them to be tough and independent, even if it’s through some somewhat questionable means.

Do I believe Rose Mary and Rex are bad parents? To be blunt, yes I do. Do I understand it’s not completely their fault? Yes, I do. Things like addiction, which Rex clearly suffers from, can tear a family to pieces. Do I recognize that they do some things right? Yes, I do. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t found the two of them charming at times. However, I don’t think this excuses any of the bad things they’ve done. Nobody should put a child through the lives that Jeannette, Lori, and Brian had to live. Do I believe that these two are redeemable? Well, that’s not my choice to make. That’s up to their children, not me. I do believe, though, that people can change. As mentioned earlier, there’s a level of self awareness that Rose Mary and Rex exhibit. If they took the time to realize their faults and do something about it, I do believe that they could become better people and better parents. The only antidote to despair is action, and it’s about time that they take it.

An example I found from the text is when they put the cats in a bag and throw them into a pond. Pg(37) "Dad put them in a burlap sack and drove to a pond made by a mining company to cool equipment. I watched him load the back of the car with bobbing, mewing bags." Rex did this because no one would take the cats but in my opinion that was a little far and maybe there could've been a better solution. There was some things they both could have done better but they also made the family happier and has strong bonds between one another

For Rex and Rosemary, they both have a strong relationship where they can hate each other for minutes and then love each other the next hour or so, there are two instances where I found this happen. On page 43, when they were moving to Battle Mountain, Rex and Rosemary had an argument that caused her to get out of the car and start walking. Rex gets out of hand and decides that he wants to run her over or hit her with the green caboose. The next day they acted like he never attempted any of this. On page 122, after their car breaking down because Jeannette instigated her dad to push the car to its limits. Rex came home drunk, and started cursing and yelling at the kids. Rex and Rosemary got into an out of hand fight and got physical and he continued to ask if she loved him once he wrestled her to the ground. She kept on saying no, until she said yes, then as if nothing happened, the fighting, cursing, shouting, they were happy once again.

In the book, “The Glass Castle,” the main character’s father, Rex, starts in the book as a weird, somewhat intelligent gambler that makes a living doing an occasional regular job and then some weird jobs. As the story starts out, Rex is the person the main character looks up to most and respects, he isn’t at all like the angry, grumbling drunkard that he becomes later on in the story. Rex tries his best to teach his kids about life lessons, most notably involving animals. Rex’s parenting is focused on making his kids as strong as possible so they get used to their situation of poor nomads and the horrible things they go through, like Billy. Rex says he likes the main character the most out of his children and is constantly brought up as she is the one who has to search and calm him down when he’s angry. Rex despises religion and will argue with priests and destroy christmas trees in a drunken fury. Rex is not at all a responsible parent and makes the family’s situation much worse by doing stupid things without thinking, which makes his family a target of rumors and bullying.

I believe that Rex walls is an acceptable father but not at the best. He tries really hard to make his kids happy and to give them something to look forward to. I do not agree with the decision to become homeless while you are raising kids. Sure it might be what Rex wants to do with his life but, to me, that is very selfish and not at all okay for the kids. He is very smart and tought the kids pretty much everything they needed to know. He consistently reminds the kid of the glasss castle he would like to build when they get rich. So in my opinion, Rex must suffer from a mental illness but that won’t stop him from having fun with his kids.

Evaluative Paragraph
My opinion on Rex walls is that he's not someone you should look up to as a role model. When it comes to rules and paying for stuff he's not the best person to follow he likes to run away from his responsibilities. Although he doesn't like paying for stuff he does take care of his kids well sometimes. For example when rose Mary gave birth they left the hospital without authorization then left town. Same thing happened whenever Jeannette got burned he took her out of there without the doctors authorization. He's a rule breaker and that's not good for him to show his kids like if what he's doing is okay.

You can tell they love their children very much so but they put them in situations that’s may be unfit for their children. Rex will get drunk in front of his kids and gets mad at his wife and will shout out curse words at his wife. Rose Mary is a loving mother but doesn’t watch her kids, like when Jeanette Walls caught on fire from cooking hot dogs by herself. The upsides are that they actually spend quality time with ther children and encourage them to try new things even if it may not be the best for them.

Some of Rex`s characteristics as a father figure is that he is very opinionated, stubborn, alcoholic, aggressive, but a hard working man. He does very well at teaching his children how to survive, and find resources to live off of, especially since that is what most of the time they have to do because of the very little amount of money they have. Rex also is very good at teaching his children to overcome their fears and grow from them. Also he does very well at educating them from time to time. He is a man who expresses his compassion and love towards his children. But some of the better things Rex could do is focus more on his family then moving every once in a while looking for gold, because his family is also his priority. Another thing he could do better at not being aggressive towards his wife, and cut down on drinking. And overall be a good role model.

My opinion about Rex and Rose Mary Walls is that they are great in any aspects, like making sure that they are always loved and making sure they conquer their fears. I think they need to work on their relationship as a couple and to be careful about their actions they display in front of their children. For example, when they got in a fight and then Rose Mary jumps out of the car, and they start to bicker by swearing at each other while Rex is trying to chase after her with the car (pg 43). But there are so many times that they are great parents, like when Rex had gave each of the kids stars as gifts, or when they would teach them lessons and make their learning abilities grow. So in conclusion, I would say they both need to work on being a good role model and by doing that they can soon become great parents.

To my understanding of this character, Rex, is a great yet need a little working on father. Every time something happens to the childrens or in the story, Rex tries to do everything he can to not let his childrens down. For example, when they didn't have money for for any Christmas presents. Rex took all three of his childrens, one at a time, out to see the stars and claimed one start as theirs to own. Another example was when Jeannette and Brian went to school without any lunch and Rex showed up at their school to bring them lunch. Rex is a good father. It's just his bad habits when he's drunk, when he's arguing with Rose Marry, or when he uses money as if he's rich. Now those are the times where he lacks on his behavior.

I don’t think that Rex and Rose Mary are adequate parents. They are not fit to be raising their children. They often make decisions that they should not be making. They are spontaneous and these decisions not only endanger themselves, but also their children. Their whole mindset about “The skedaddle” is extremely skewed. For them to think that whenever even a simple problem arises, that they should leave the town that they are in, is very immature. You cannot always run away from your problems, you have to fix them. They also get into too many fights to be able to raise emotionally stable children. They themselves are not emotionally or mentally stable. Rex has a drinking problem which would definitely hinder his ability to raise a child. There are multiple instances where Rex acts unnecessarily irrational. One example of this would be when he and Rose Mary fight about how long she has been pregnant with Maureen for, and he tries to run her over (pg. 42-43)

Rex and Rose Mary have an unusual way of parenting, to say the least. Evaluating their parenting style is conflicting because it isn't all good or all bad, and it certainly leaves a lasting impact on Jaenette as she grows up. The impact they have on their kids is the most important part of their parenting, and I think the kids do learn a lot from their parents. The worst things the kids are exposed to is Rex's alcoholism and the sometimes abusive relationship between him and Rose Mary. Kids should not grow up watching their parents physically fight and then be shown that it's okay because neither of their parents act affected by it.

In The Glass Castle, we are shown the parenting skills of Rex and Rose Mary Walls as very unconventional. They live a very carefree life that changes often and has very little structure in it, that causes Jeannette and her siblings (Lori, Brian, and Maureen) to practically raise themselves. The Walls children don’t regularly attend school nor do their parents have steady jobs. While you can’t say that Rex and Rose Mary don’t teach their children life lessons while they live their very hectic life but it seems very irresponsible. Meals are never a guarantee and when Rex “discovered” that his kids didn’t have lunches for school because there wasn’t any food in the house he went out and bought a lot of food with money I’m not quite sure where he got if he blamed Rose Mary for spending it all on art supplies. I don’t think Rex is a bad father I just think that he has problems with his ego and refuses to accept the fact that he is an alcoholic in debt on the run carrying his family down with him by not just keeping a steady paying job and instead wasting it all on alcohol (just to feed his addiction), splurging on random things to prove to his kids that he can buy anything (examples being buying them huge lunches just for school, or buying them bikes just because he could), or on his invention the Prospector in hopes of striking it rich by using it to find gold. I think both parents should have set their dreams aside for the well being of their kids (Rex in hopes of finding gold and Rose Mary with her paintings). You can’t say that Rex doesn’t love his children he just does it in a weird way, but he seems to always support them in everything they do. Rex Walls is a family man and would do just about anything and everything to protect them.

Rex and Rose Mary probably aren’t the parents others would like to be , or their kids would like to be as older. But they of course don’t care what other parents think or care how differently they raise their children. They really love their kids but they also are careless in a way. They don’t set up restrictions or limits to their children because her mom “believed that children shouldn’t be burdened with a lot of rules and restrictions”.She also thinks it's best not to have rules so children can learn with their own mistakes. I don’t believe she is completely wrong but i do think she should put rules and limits or something could happen to her children and she wont know due to the fact that she doesn’t know what they are doing.

When Rex and Rose Mary thought that Jeannette had been in the hospital long enough, Rex went into the hospital and “broke” her out. While Rose and the rest of the kids were waiting in the car. As Rex came out with Jeannette in his arms, Rose cranked the car and got ready to move over so they could hurry up and get out of there. They are good parents, but at the same time they do not take some matters as serious as they should be. If she was still in the hospital it was for a reason, the burns might not have healed all the way and could have caused more damage than good. But they always tried to make the best out of their situations for the kids, and tried to help them to have fun.

I think that Rex and Rose Mary try to be good parents and they do what they think is best but sometimes they don’t end up doing what is best for Jeannette, in a few parts I have read, they end up doing things for themselves and don’t really think about how it will effect Jeannette until it’s already done. For example, at the beginning of the book Jeannette starts off by telling how when she was only 3 years old she was cooking herself hot dogs without anyone else in the room and her clothes caught on fire and she got burned. To me i feel like a 3 year old should not be cooking and if they are they should definitely have someone close by helping/watching. So in this case i think her parents weren’t doing the best job at being very good parents.

But what they can try to do better is to try stay in one place and let the kids stay in school even tho their parents are really smart. They can also work on saving money and putting it back incase’s they need it. Other than that i think they did the best they could with what they have.

I believe that Rex Walls can be a good father figure at times, but he is not always the best. Rosemary Walls can be both an okay mother and a bad mother. I believe that Rex is a good father when he spends time with his children, because while he spends time with them he shows them that he cares about them. His role as a father is also iffy, because he runs away from his responsibilities and problems. For example, on page 17 he decides that they were leaving their home behind because he was tired of paying bills. He also showed he cared for them, because he reassured his children that he would take care of them and that there was no need for them to worry. Rosemary is a good mom because she shows the kids that she cares for them, but she doesn't spend valuable time with them. Overall, they want what is best for their children even though it may not always seem like they do.

Rex and Rosemary have different parenting qualities;even through may not set guidelines or rules for their children teaching them life lessons. The wall’s children had l never felt homeless, deprived or unhappy with their parents and their learned their life as an exhilarating adventure traveling from place to place always moving . Rex and Rosemary are not bad parents because by allowing brain, Jeanette and l to exploration it helps them build character for living out in the real world. Parents make mistakes all the time fighting, auguring and lying Rex and Rose Mary all ways come through for their children by possible means. Pg (67-72) Rex and Rose Mary auguring about living with no money and being able to support their children then a domestic fight broke out and the walls children interfering to stop their father from dropping their mother from the second story house in battle mountain. Domestic violence in a parents home is unsettling to children and it scary for children to see an abusive relationship it affects child development and create trust issues with others.
Parents do anything to help promote the welfare of the children any means necessary Rex and rose Mary helped their kids by shoplifting and by over drafting money in their bank account to provide their children with necessities pg(111). Rex as a parent as many talents he helped teach Jeannette how to swim by forcing her to be in the middle of the hotpot when there were no walls to hang on to and by she was forced to fight or flight learning tough love knowing she will be able to handle the anything because survival of the fittest or learning to swim or sink not having your Rex to baby her all the time pg(66). The only problem Rex faces as a parent is abusing alcohol because children would believe that drinking is a tolerable act but alcohol only cause problems because during Christmas he ruined their best year celebrating on Christmas of the not a week later by burning the decorated tree pg (114-115). Rosemary is not a bad parent her parenting style is neglect caring not about her children but dreaming of being a painter is her focus painting everyday.
Rex and Rosemary may not be good parents but their children is not dead, Christmas their family is prosper even through hard times they are still happy and content with their lives. Parenting is hard there are good times and the bad ; the only thing i wished Rex and Rose would do is protect their family more they have been to many close times where the Walls's children got hurt or almost died when brain and Jeannette playing with matches in their laboratory (61)

The Glass Castle is a distinctive memoir all around. One of the few subjects that comes close to being as distinctive is Rex and Rose Mary's parenting styles. This paragraph will cover Rex Wall's parenting style and how it might differ to other parents. Rex Walls perhaps is one of if not the most controversial parental figures I have encountered. From the commence of the story Rex shows extreme trust in his daughter, Jeannette, by entrusting her with fire shortly after she had a near-fatal incident with the gas. Throughout the whole hospital experience Rex showed parental behaviors not exhibited by the common parent. Another example of Rex's odd parental actions would be how time after time he encouraged Jeannette to not listen to the nurse's advice advocating that it was nonsense. This example also led to Rex forcefully taking Jeannette out of the hospital in a non-desired manner by other parents. These actions show Rex's unique parenting style not common to other parents. However, I do not think this style is at all bad. Jeannette is an extremely bright girl with excellent manners that show that although unique, Rex's parental figure example was well enough to put Jeannette Walls on a good path.

One example could be when he went to the cheetahs cage, touched the cheetah and taught or brought his children with him to go confront the cheetah.

My thoughts on Rose Mary Walls is that she is in her own world or delusional you might say. The positive aspects of her is that she is always positive and looks on the bright side of things in life. One example is when she left her Piano outside and said, "Most pianists never get the chance to play in the great out-of-doors."

The treatment of the Wall's children in this passage, on pages one hundred seventy-five to one hundred seventy-seven shows how Rex and Rosemary's parenting could be drastically changed. In this excerpt Jeanette talks about how cold it is inside the house because there isn't any heat. Jeanette only has a small coat with the buttons missing and she describes how limbs that were fragile would snap in the cold air. she says that the house has a coal stove but her parents say they can't afford coal, so they will have to come up with another method of heating. In my mind if her parents cared for her they would find a way to come up with money to keep their children warm. Instead of their parents taking care of the situation Jeanette and her brother Brian decide to go collect coal off the trucks that fall off. Rex and Rosemary always embrace their conditions and i think this is sometimes okay, although they should be better parents and keep their children warm; and if they cant keep them warm, then they shouldn't be parents.

Instead of finding somewhere cheaper, they decide to get it burn only stay for a lil bit because they can’t afford it. I think they should fine somewhere cheaper and something they could afford and stay there for awhile at least. I also think the dad needs to do a lot better because Jeannette is trying to get her mom to leave him because he can’t keep money. They have only been eating popcorn for Forbes three days. I think that Rex and Rose Mary Could had changed their lives of trying to become more supporting for their kids and actually go out and get a job and get money. I said that because they was already living in the grandma's place. It was as if they had a new whole different life but the same peoples in a family. They had a place to call home. But no. That was not what they did. Instead Rex was always out drinking and Rose Mary was always just doing her art. They said that they couldn't afford coal when Jeannette was freezing cold. But if they actually had a job. They could had did something about it.

She has broken down multiple times and doesn’t have the greatest ideas, and is a suck-up to Rex’s parents and refuses to stick with what she has said in the past near them.

Evaluative Paragraph
In this part of the book Rex and Rose Mary really get comfortable with the thought of their kids parenting themselves. There is nothing wrong with having independent kids but eventually it gets to be too far. Although we love Rex's way of viewing things, and we root for him to be a better man, he really digs a deeper hole for himself. Towards the middle of this part, when Rose Mary leaves to take her college courses, Rex almost completely loses Jeannette's trust. He takes their food money for alcohol and he, in a way, allows Jeannette to be sexually assaulted. Jeannette as a 13 year old girl had to get her own job to support her siblings and make up the difference her father wasn't providing. Later in this part after Lori and Rose Mary returned home, Lori and Jeannette save up money for the big move they were going to make to New York City. Believe it or not Rex stole the money for beer, leaving them hopeless. They both eventually figure out a way out but the thought of him stealing it and being that selfish as a parent is absolutely insane. Just think about how unhappy and insecure you have to feel to want to leave your siblings and family at the age of 13 to move to one of the biggest cities in America. Rex and Rose Mary supported them in there decision to move, but heavily tried to persuade them to stay. In my personal opinion I feel like they wanted them to stay so that the ‘burden’ of providing for the younger kids was on Lori and Jeannette and not them. Rose Mary didn't even wake up to say goodbye to Lori when she left. As an emotional girl, I would've been very upset if my mother treated me in that way. Rex especially tried to redeem himself, trying to bring the Glass Castle option back to the table, Jeannette really showed him who was actual boss by telling him that it would change absolutely nothing. Both, Rex and Rose Mary really let themselves go, they semi cared in the beginning of the book but now they do not even try.

And Rose is a teacher but most of the time she only lasts for a while, because she either gets fire or, quits. And when she has money she buys things for her self. And sometimes she does not have money to feed her children. But some things that both parents are well at is, always making sure their children are educated and have a roof over their heads.

I think Rex could do a better job with his addiction to alcohol, if he could possibly control it, he could help provide for his family and they wouldn’t be struggling so much. The same goes for Rose Mary, After coming home from renewing her teaching license, she decides that she doesn’t want to teach anymore and just wants to focus on her painting, even though she has been doing that all along, she doesn’t want to provide for the family anymore either. That’s where I think as a parent there are many sacrifices that you have to make just for your children, I know many that my parents have made for me and my siblings, but both Rose Mary and Rex are not doing so. The kids have to feed themselves, clothe themselves and do anything and everything to survive. Jeannette stated that there were several times they went hungry after the ran out of money, and the living conditions that there were in, didn’t suit proper living conditions; The roof in their room leaking, the stairs of the house that fell apart, their outside bathroom that was overfilled.

During part 3 of the novel, I felt Rex and Rose Mary's parenting style and treatment of their children only decline from part 2. Rex's drinking has clearly gotten worse, as he disappears for days at a time and must be searched for by Jeanette until she finds him in a local bar. Rose Mary's behavior has also become more baffling, exemplified when she began eating a hidden candy bar in front of her starving kids until they caught and took it from her. They are also both neglectful towards their kids, seeing as how they deny that Brian was molested by Erma or Jeanette was assaulted by Robbie and move on like it was meaningless.

Why leave your children with someone that is abusive if your not supporting her thoughts. A part of the book that showing that Brian is abused is on pg. 148 " The person that is taking care of them while Rex and Rose are away is Erma there grandma not the best person to leave your child with. Also when they move town to town can be stressful and is irresponsible for there actions and cannot handle it that's why they move place to place and that's not right they should fix there problems not run away.

In this chapter on the book Jeannette's family stays in for a "few days" at her dads grandma house. Throughout this chapter Jeannette explains her experience while being at Erma's home. A lot of stuff happens , much that I wasn't expecting. Erma lives with two other people who is Stanley and her husband. In this paragraph Jeannette's parents leave her and her siblings to drive back to Phoenix. They are told that they are teaching them to be independent and be capable of not depending on anyone but themselves. Rex and Rose Mary aren't the worst parents then just try to teach their kids how to never depend on anyone else , but they also aren't great on the fact they left them alone with family members they barely met and know nothing of.

I harp on Rex Walls a lot, and frankly it’s because I’m fascinated by how this man’s mind works, but I’ve decided to focus on Rose Mary for a change. Rose Mary is an interesting person, “eccentric” doesn’t even begin to describe it. She’s a prime example of what a broken marriage can do to a person. Does that make her innocent when it comes to the treatment of her children? Oh no, not by a long shot. What Rose Mary has gone through in her life is awful, nobody deserves to be put through what she’s had to endure. However, just because somebody has hurt you doesn’t mean you get to hurt somebody else. Especially if they had no hand in what was done to you, and if they’re your own children. Her actions are inexcusable.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: she is irresponsible. Rose Mary refuses to get a job despite being perfectly capable of doing so. In fact, she quits her teaching job after having her certificate renewed. This job is one of the few things keeping their family fed. Her own children recognize this, and beg her to not quit her job. She asks Lori and Jeannette why don’t they get jobs, why does she have to be the responsible one? Mind you, Jeanette is only twelve when this happens. The only reason she quits is so she can have more free time to herself. When the children find her a diamond ring, she refuses to sell it despite that being their plan. She says she wants to keep it. When their food is infested with maggots she tells her children to get over it and eat it anyway. She’s dismissive, irresponsible, and selfish.

I hate to sound so unsympathetic towards both Rex and Rose Mary whenever discussing these sort of things. Truth be told I do understand what they’ve gone through, and I understand their experiences are what have shaped them into who they are now. I also understand they can be kind, and that they have done a few good things for their children. However, their own traumas and the few good things they’ve done never have and never will excuse their actions. I know people who have gone through similar things to Rose, and they’re nothing like her. Same goes for Rex. They’re kind, caring, empathetic, they learn from their mistakes, unlike the Walls’ parents who seem to be stuck in a cycle. Experience is not an excuse for bad actions.

Rose Mary’s irresponsibility, selfishness, and dismissive attitude of her children’s problems is a serious issue. If you are to be a parent, you need to be responsible, be willing to make sacrifices, and be willing to listen to your child when there’s something wrong. These are traits that Rose Mary lacks, and for this reason I don’t believe she’s a good parent.

Like when Rex and Rose go to Phoenix to get the rest of their stuff they leave the kids with Erma. When they got back from Phoenix the kids were in the bed and all they could hear was Rex stomping down the stairs to yell at them. They tried to explain what had happened but he just wouldn't listen. Why would he not even give them the chance to get a few words in to explain themselves?

I believe Rex and Rosemary could change and be better parents for their children after reading Welch I understand these parents are lost cause. Rex and Rosemary do not care about anyone else than about their self pride. Parents are supposed to be loving and caring not lying , cheating or stealing.Rex used Jeannette as a pawn in his money making schemes and had put her into harm's way by forcing her to protected herself from a predator. Would a parent forced the children to protected themes at a bar from a stranger? Rex Allowed a stranger to kiss his own daughter, its neglect Rex shows throughout this episode pg(208-213). Rex is child always gets his own way he doesn't care who he has to cheat, steal or lie from his own children to get a fulling of alcohol because he stole a check from Rosemary royalty check from the drilling company that drilling for oil on her land pg(214) Rex is a sad pathetic man he may be smart but his excuses and lies is destroying his own family he lost his biggest supporter his own daughter when he wiped her six times o the back of her thighs when jennet broke the unspoken rule not to talk back and respect her parents pg(218-220)

Rosemary is a scared and forcefully trying to have a positive outlook for her self avoiding her children because she more worried about her self esteem than her family because when brain and Jeannette scavenge found a diamond ring that could provide the walls family with food and other necessities but Rosemary refused to sell it for her selfish reasons. Jeannette proposed to her mother to leave her husband Rosemary reacted as she has no power to do anything by herself this episode shows she is refusing to change her ways it also showed she less inferior the her husband pg (186-188). Rosemary started to work for her own personal greed because she used her money for items on layaway for herself pg(197).Rose Mary is actions is divesting to read how she is always hypocritical when to tell Jeannette about avoiding other people comments.

Rex and Rosemary have changed throughout the part Welch I had lost faith that parents can change and had destroyed their own family by hurting their own children. I wonder about Rosemary childhood because through this part of the glass castle I had incite of Rex past not Rosemary. Jeannette , Lorie had left as soon as they to be away from their own parents on their own choice because of all their parents choices and decisions. I can't believe that Rex and Rosemary Will not get their act together and stop neglecting their own children . How will brain and Lorie survive when Jeannette and Lorie leave.

I'm also kinda fed up with her reasons for why she does nothing with Rex because of her excuses and beliefs, letting things happening to them like Rex taking the money that she and her family made.

In this section of the book, the Walls move once again, by moving this makes it hard on the kids to finally call a place “home” and having real friends they can be with. While leaving with Grandma Erma, the four of them lived in the basement in the freezing cold with one bed mattress sharing one blanket. They were also not provided with the most appropriate material of clothing. While staying there they had a incident that lead to more questions and making them once again leave to find a new home. They end up in a very small apartment which is not the best conditions for the winter. Food is another thing that has always been a problem throughout this book, having them rummage through the trash cans just to find a decent enough leftover that someone had tossed away, also money has always been a huge factor in the Walls family. These are the many reasons why I would say that Rex and Rose Mary Walls both need to find themselves and fix the reasons why this family is always hitting rock bottom multiple times.

In this section of the book I think Rex and Rose were not the best as parent's. Why leave your children with someone that is abusive if your not supporting her thoughts. A part of the book that showing that Brian is abused is on pg. 148 "Do you think she ever did something to Dad like what she did to Brian?”The person that is taking care of them while Rex and Rose are away is Erma there grandma not the best person to leave your child with. Also when they move town to town can be stressful and is irresponsible for there actions and cannot handle it that's why they move place to place and that's not right they should fix there problems not run away.

In chapter 4 of section 3 I feel as if Jeanette’s parents are hypocrites. I feel this way because they tell her to stand up for what she believes in but when she does she just gets in trouble. Whenever Erma was talking bad about the Africans American community. Jeanette talks back because her new friend was an african american. Her mother gets mad at her for talking back but her parents always told her to stand up for herself but right there they didn the opposite and discouraged it.

My personal opinion is that I don’t like Rex although he has a job and “works hard” he isn’t responsible at all what so ever. He works and gets payed but once he gets payed instead of going and buying stuff his family needs he goes and spends the money at bars and stuff to drink. I know he has an alcoholism problem but it’s not fair to his family to go through all of this because he isn’t responsible enough! The kids go through a lot by having to be moving around all the time they feel helpless because every-time they get somewhere new they’re scared to make friends because they know they won’t be there for long.

Rex and Rosemary Walls still continue to not be the best of parents to their kids. Throughout part three of The Glass Castle, they still continue to put their kids in situations that are too hard to manage. For example, whenever Jeanette and Brian find a two-carat diamond ring outside of their yard, they tell their mom that they should cash it to buy food, but yet again, she doesn't think about her kids, but herself by, insisting that they keep it so she can replace it with her wedding ring. Yet, knowing that her kids have been starving and digging through the trash cans for food and clothes, she doesn't keep in mind their needs. Also, when Rose Mary renewed her teaching license she decides to quit teaching so she can resume her artistic life. On the other hand, Rex still continues to abuse his alcohol consumption. Rex does not know how to handle money. So whenever Rose Mary and Lori leave for the summer, Jeanette decides that she is going to stick to a budget so she can provide for both Brian and Maureen. Her and Lori had planned to earn money to buy Maureen a gift for her seventh birthday. Rex keeps pleading her to give him money, so she gives him thirty dollars which he spends on pool, and then Jeanette feels used. Rex also steals money from their piggy bank that Lori and Jeanette were gonna use to escape from Welch, which makes Lori very upset and she stops speaking to her father. In conclusion, both Rex and Rosemary are not good at parenting due to irresponsibility, and because they don't try to improve their life, or the life of their children.

In this part of the book Rex and Rose Mary become okay with there kids being independent and I feel like if anything this would have been a great time for them to start supporting there kids and being there for them more and maybe start looking for jobs. But instead they do the exact opposite.

Rex starts stealing money from the kids and starts to lie and loses Jeannette's trust all together and just allows one of his kids to be sexually assaulted. He is doing the exact opposite of what a dad should do but even worse.

To make all of this even more worse Rose Mary didn't do anything about all of this or care what so ever.

Also Rex and Rose Mary's words don't line up with there actions at all. They told Jeannette and Lori that they could move to New York but they did things to make them stay.

My feelings towards Rex and Rose Mary have changed very much after reading this part of the book this part of the book makes me so disappointed and sad and angry like in the being at least they somewhat cared but now they just don't care at all and in the beginning how they were living was not that bad it was there choice and just a different way of parenting but now they aren't even parenting at all and treating there kids like nothing and if I was one of there children I would not even look at them as my parents, real parents don't do that or even think about treating there kids like that.

They don’t even try to be good parents. They are irresponsible and they spend money on themselves rather than what would benefit the family. When Jeannette and Lori offer to help Rose Mary with the budget, she does not let them, even though the way she is spending money ends up with their house literally falling apart. In addition, this gets so bad that their children are actually leaving them to go to New York. (pg 240-241)

I think throughout the book you realize that Rex wants to be a good dad and you see him trying but i don’t think he really knows how to be a good dad. I think Rose Mary is more caring and she loves her kids but Rex just gets her in bad moods sometimes and makes her angry, at some points it almost seems like she just doesn’t care. Like for example when she was talking about how she lost one of her children when they were just a baby she said it didn’t really affect her. I overall think they both try their best to be good parents but just don’t know how and considering they don’t have much money it’s hard to do anything especially if they don’t have a stable living space.

Evaluative Paragraph

My opinion about Rex and Rose Mary Walls has not changed very much after reading part 3 of The Glass Castle. I still see both Walls parents as irresponsible and selfish people who put their wants before their children’s needs. In my last evaluative paragraph I focused more on Rex but I think I’ll discuss my thoughts on Rose Mary this time. Rose Mary is a strange character with many flaws in her personality. I see Rose Mary as a very selfish person and she shows this mainly when dealing with her children an example being when Jeannette and Brian find a diamond ring and not just any old fake diamond it was a real two-carat diamond ring and instead of selling it like Jeannette and Brian intended so they could have food and pay off their house Rose Mary slips the ring on her finger and says it’s her replacement wedding ring. Rose Mary knew good and well what the ring was worth and instead her self-esteem is more important than her kids eating. There was also another incident that comes to mind regarding Rose Mary being selfish, during this time Rex was disappearing for a few days on end and very little money was coming in so little in fact the Jeannette resorted to scavenging for food from the trash cans at school. One night in particular while all the kids were sitting around trying to not think about food Rose Mary kept ducking under the blanket and when Brian noticed he asked if she was chewing something to which Rose Mary lies and said her teeth were hurting and then said she was just moving her jaw to increase circulation, Brian yanks the blanket back to uncover huge family-sized Hershey chocolate bars that Rose Mary had eaten half of without sharing any with her kids. Rose Mary says its not her fault she’s a sugar addict just like how Rex is an alcoholic -yeah like that justifies her actions at all- Brian snatches the chocolate bar and divided it equally among the kids. Rose Mary should be ashamed of herself! Sneaking food while her children are starving.

After reading the Glass Castle my opinion had changed throughout the course of this book because Rex and Rosemary have hidden secrets money and choose to live a life full of adventure instead of being stable in a house with warm beds and roof over their heads.Should a parent intervene in the lives of their children? Rex and Rosemary affect their children by depending on them when their were struggling being out in the streets of New York City because of their choice to be homeless.I believe the child that had suffered the most was Maureen because of the Rex and Rosemary Parenting skills of neglect, and response ability made her rely on others to take care of her; I blame Rex and Rosemary for making their children suffer as kids and as adults for believing their foolish ways of living and not taken action for their lives. If Rex and Rosemary change their selfish ways and provide the family with a stable home I believe that the their children would have stayed and flourished in Welch instead of leaving their parents and heading to New York City after their junior year. The Walls children Decided to get away from their parents, but after 3 years their parents follow them to intervene in their children’s lives.

Rosemary is confusing as a parent because she pretends that life's an adventure and doesn't care about her children; all Rosemary cares about is her self-esteem and her potential for her art career. Lori allowed her parents to live with her and Maureen when Rex and Rosemary were kicked out, because of their own selfish reasons, from a boarding house and a flop house. Lori saved herself from insanity by telling her mother to leave pg (252-254) and Rosemary moved backed into their white van with her husband. Jeannette suggest ideas for her mother to move back to West Virginia or back to Phoenix at a coffee shop and use her resources to get back on her feet but Rosemary quotes “I’ve spent my life taking care of other people ;now it's time to take care of me” pg (258-259) .I believe Rosemary is addicted to adventure and living in the streets because after Rex battled tuberculosis and he received a job as a maintenance man. Rex had a stable home ,a job, and was staying sober longer than the detox in Phoenix. Rosemary convinced Rex to quit and go back to being homeless back in the city and the hardships of the city forced Rex to go back to drinking alcohol pg(262). Rosemary needs help I believe she is a manipulating person ,weak and she will follow Rex dragging down the rest of the family with her wants and desires. Rosemary lied to her children and needed them to take care of her because of her own greed. She owns land in Texas, a house in Phoenix, a two carat diamond ring and wanted Jeannette to borrow a million dollars from her fiance to buy her uncle Jim”s land in Texas. Rosemary wanted to have it for the family and was disappointed in Jeannette for asking her for a favor pg(272-273). I believe Rex was destroying his family from the alcoholic consumption, it open my eyes to see that Rosemary caused more physical damage to her children.

Rex was not the best father but he changed ;I respected him through this part of the Glass Castle because in bad situations people are forced to change while rex was in the hospital learning and pondering about Mortality and the nature of the cosmos and the chaos theory and believing there's a god pg (260-261) and when recovered he a stable a job as a repairman , lived in a apartment and stop drinking alcohol but it never lasted long. I wish Rex would accepted and take the initiative to change on his own. He should have accepted his presents that Jeannette give him on Christmas instead of leaving Lori”s apartment pg (262-263). I believe Rex was trying for what he had even through he quit his job he helped Jeannette finish school by helping her pay the rest of her school by playing poker he might have not provided as a parent but he wanted his little girl to secede in a education pg (264-265). Rex may have lived the life he wanted being married to Rosemary and lived providing for his children but his actions throughout this book were unacceptable as a parent. I felt bad when Rex passed away from his rare tropical disease because how would Rosemary , Brain , lori and Jeannette react without their father in the world. Rex tried his best even through he struggle with his flaw of alcohol he was very smart and hoped he had help Jeannette before died two week later pg(277-279).

Rex and Rosemary are not ideal parents but I believe through this book that all families struggle it doesn't matter if you are rich,or poor or want to be homeless Jeannette , brain , Lori , Maureen have learned life lessons with their family even though the Wall’s children left home at a young age. Their life showed them how they are going to be parents in the future from life lessons they learned as children. The only thing I wished Rex and Rosemary did differently was try to helped their children more than themselves. Rex and Rosemary have different qualities as parents some good and bad but that relationship had destroyed the family as the children grow up a parent role changes. What do people call a family? Rex and Rosemary were a family thick and thin even thorough their children had lives of their own; a family always stay together and a family relationship grows.

In this part of the novel Jeanette explains that she has been writing letters from New York to her brother, Brian. She has been writing to him about how good it is there and how "sweet" the life is there. She wants to persuade him to move to New York with her and her sister, Lori. He writes back and tells her that things in Welch are going downhill. He explains that Rex is always drunk and Rosemary is completely living in her own world. He has moved his bed to the porch and wants to know when the soonest he can come live with them is. This shows the lack of parenting skills that Rex and Rosemary have. It is sad to think that a junior in high school had to build temporary walls on his porch because the roof in his bedroom collapsed. I feel that if the Walls' parents need to understand the way that the kids are living their lives and it is definitely not like the average child's life. If they weren't so focused on themselves then there kids wouldn't have to go through things like this.

Evaluating Rex and Rose Mary as parents and life without their children in their care as a whole throughout the rest of the book, I would say there was not much change.Rex is not role model to his children for example,he takes Jeanette to the bar where she attack by a man named Robbie just for a couple bucks. He possibly ruins Lori chance to go to New York by destroying all the work she has done on her Shakespeare sculpture. Not to mention the fact that had stolen from Brian,Lori, and Jeanette savings for alcohol or essential going out the bar.Rose Mary stills refuses to get job and even qualified to become a teacher but desert that for her passion of the arts. She also try's to convince Jeanette to stay in Welch with all her friends and family;Welch being her whole life.Presuming that Jeanette would not missed and jealousy arises because Rose Mary is stuck where she's at.Did Rose Mary and Rex Walls unconvental parenting help mold who Jeanette is today?Yes,yes it did.But did that work for all the Walls children? No it didn't.

To me dad's are suppose to be the ones taking care of the children and buying them nice things. Her father could never keep a job so he couldn't buy her nice things like she could. When he did have a job, he would spend it on beer. I think he should keep a job and have money but to give him credit he stopped drinking for a while. Now Jeannette lives in a home with her husband, but her parents stay on the street because that's what they want to do, and they chose to do that. they never got to build that glass castle

Evaluative Paragraph
For the last sections I want to mainly talk about Rex and his change in parenting style. In the beginning of the book we get a hint, right of the bat, that Rex is a different type of parent. Not that Rose Mary is normal, just that Rex is more unique. He cares but in a way that's sporadic, I wouldn’t even call it tough love, it's a little rougher than that i’d say. In the beginning of the book he is a little more protective over the children, and a little more present. He isn’t sitting at home waiting on them to get home from school but he is in their life influencing their decisions. In this section when Jeannette, Lori and Brian are settling into their New York life, it’s almost like Rex wants to distance himself from them. He doesn’t go a see Jeannette's new apartment, and he doesn’t mind leaving Lori’s apartment when things get tense. He is slowly losing the fight in him as the section goes on. He always remained in their lives in different ways, just not a prominent part in their decisions anymore. When he died he didn't want a big scene, he went peacefully in the hospital bed. I think that really contradicts how Rex lived his life, but it was also exactly what all the kids needed.

The role that Rex and Rose Mary have in their childrens' lives changes during these last two parts of the novel. The Walls children are no longer heavily affected by what their parents do because Rex and Rose Mary have no control over their lives anymore, although their parents had been losing that since they were kids. The parents do become more supportive and accepting of all of their kids' decisions to move to NYC, even moving their themselves.
Of course there are always things I think the parents could improve on, like caring enough about Maureen to recognize her issues and get her proper help. Other than Maureen, the relationships between the kids and their parents seem to have simmered out. Overall, I think these parts have showcased some of Rex and Rose Mary's most genuine parenting moments since the beginning of the novel. This including Rex wanting to help Jeannette by reading all of her college books and the ending Thanksgiving scene where Rose Mary enjoys time and dinner with her family for likely one of the first times.

In my opinion in the end of The Glass Castle. Has changed, I have a different perspective of people who are homeless, and live on the streets. Knowing that not all people who are homeless, are homeless just because, but that some actually choose to be. And my view towards on Rex and Rose Mary on being parents has changed, as much as they were different from other parents. Rex and Rose Amy had many secrets and always went back to the same old arguments. And always struggled to keep a home and job. And they always brought there problems to their children and always wanted their life`s to be an adventure and not be so normal like other families. But things that Rex and Rose Mary do well is that they try to give their children much they can. A thing they could do better is let their children be and let them experience life on their own and not interfere much with their life`s.

There’s something I find interesting about the Walls parents this time around. They’re arguably better than they were before. Perfect? No, of course not. They still do some things wrong. Crashing at their children’s new homes for free and refusing to follow their rules isn’t all that great. Rose Mary does this by making a huge mess of Lori’s apartment. But, honestly, other than that there’s nothing downright bad that they did in this particular episode. Of course, this doesn’t erase any of what they’ve done in the past nor does it excuse it, but this is interesting.

It seems as though creating a distance between themselves and their parents has improved the relationship between the Walls family. Not perfectly of course, after all Maureen practically goes mad upon being kicked out of the house and no longer talks to the rest of the family. Getting out and having their own places, their own families, their own jobs, has significantly improved the relationship between this broken family. Sometimes there are people that you can really only handle in small doses, and it’s clear that for their children Rex and Rose Mary are two of those people. They come together as a family on Christmas and Thanksgiving, Rex and Rose Mary call their children to check in every now and again, and there’s even what feels like a moment of reconcilement between Jeannette and Rex before Rex passes away. With some distance this family handles itself better.

They end up moving to New York to be with their children, and they mostly keep to themselves. They also begin to put their lives back together. They don’t screw their children over for money anymore, and are making great progress in finding a place for themselves. Rex even pays for Jeannette’s tuition (pg. 264-265). They start to make amends for all the crap that they put their children through, and it shows in their relationships.

Evaluative paragraph
Rex and Rose Mary keep telling their children that they will change for them and make a better lifestyle. When Jeannette and her sibling had already moved out and were living in New York they felt like everything was going fine and maybe their parents had changed. They were wrong because whe jeannette had turned the radio on one day she heard about a van that had broken down leaving clothes and furniture all over the freeway. She realized that was her parents because her mom had told her later that day, just when everything was going fine Rex decides to tell his kids they're moving back in with them to be a united family again clearly the kids don't want that. Although Rex and Rose Mary say they have changed they haven't because they keep trying to ask their kids for money, Eventually Rex gets sick and passes away. My final opinion on Rex and Rosemary is that they aren't the typical parents you'd want but they did teach their kids that no matter the situation you can survive in some way shape or form.

In the 4th part of the book, What I think that Rex and Rose Mary Could do better as parents is, what they should have done earlier in Jeannette, Brian, Lori and mostly Maureen’s lives. They should have been more involved with Maureen when she was in her younger age so that she wouldn’t have become so dependent on them. Rose Mary decides that it is time for Maureen to go own her own and she kicks Maureen out of there abandoned home and Maureen ended up stabbing her. Rex calls Maureen a “lost puppy” and that she had “faulty wiring” on page 276, But this could have been different if he had been there for Maureen like he had been there for the rest of them during their childhood. If both parents had taken a better part in being in Maureen’s life then maybe her fate would have been different. She may have ended up also going to an Ivy League College or just found another passion to pursue in.

In the finale ending of this book, The family really drifted apart and it was hard on all of them. But during all this chaos and battle between the parents and the children. Even after all the brawling, both Rex and Rose Mary still wanted to see their children and still wanted to be a parent. Especially during the hard times of letting the kids know the truth about his recent diagnosed with a rare incurable disease. I think in the end of this, they both regret not doing everything they could and regret their decisions they made throughout their childhood but they made amazing memories good and bad that they will never forget. Honestly with that I personally think they were good parents and taught their children very important lessons throughout, even though he did not complete the glass castle that they all had dreamed of, both Rex and Rose Mary tried their best at parenting in their own unique ways.

Many problems always happened throughout Jeanette's childhood , many which was effected because of her own father. They tell their kids they need to be independent yet they move in with them in New York. Rex and Rose Mary often went against what they said.

In parts four and five of The Glass Castle, I still have the same perspective towards the Walls' way of parenting. They could still do way better with their parenting skills if they put themselves in their kids situations. Now that Jeanette, Lori, Maureen, and Brian are all grown up, they no longer want to live the way their parents are living. Lori and Jeanette have moved to New York City and start working to support their needs. They want Bryan and Maureen to move to New York as well since, their parents have found a temporary home but yet again, they are not very stable or responsible. I feel that Rose Mary and Rex are not happy to see their kids succeed, every time thy're on the verge of doing something great, they try to knock their hope and spirit down. I believe that if Rex and Rose Mary put more of their part in stability, responsibility, and in priorities their life would be so much easier if they just collaborated with each other, and their children.

After finishing the last and final parts of The Glass Castle I can say that Rex and Rose Mary Walls are extremely complicated characters and even more complicated parents. Once Lori and Jeannette moved to New York both parents just seem to give up completely, Rex was only sober when he was in jail and Rose Mary was living in her own little world focused only on herself, both forgetting that they still had two kids they had two raise. Brian slept on the porch under an inflatable raft. What kind of parent lets their kid move to the porch to sleep on the front porch because they wouldn’t fix the roof, not to mention Maureen was still staying with other more responsible parents at their houses. Rex got extremely mad at Lori for “stealing his children” so mad in fact that he claimed that he had disowned her after Lori offered to take Maureen and getting her into an excellent New York public school. In part 4 New York we get even more lovely examples of just how rude and selfish the Walls parents can be. After getting kicked out for being behind on rent and for setting a room on fire thanks to a sleeping Rex and his unhealthy smoking addiction they moved in with Lori and Maureen. That is till Rex couldn’t stop being an angry drunk who was always trying to start fights or somehow had money he’d gotten by hustling others that Brian had to take him in but only if Rex would live by his rules to which Rex replied “You’re the king of your own castle, and that’s the way it should be but it’ll be a chilly day in hell before I bow to my own son” (page 254), now Rex is sleeping in that run down white van they arrived in. Something about Rex and his huge egoistic attitude that just irks the daylights out of me. Oh and lets not forget how Rex loved to go to Lori’s apartment just to argue with Rose Mary and with the neighbors leading Lori to have to kick out her mother which made her very uncomfortable but offered to help as much as they could both parents denying any. Rex, Rose Mary, and Tinkle were all living in the van till one day it was left in a no parking zone and got towed away, making Rex and Rose Mary officially homeless as they spent that night sleeping on a park bench. When winter came neither parents had a real plan in place besides avoiding shelter and going to churches to sleep in pews unless they were all filled to which Rex had to go to a shelter while Rose Mary went to Lori crying about how hard life on the streets can be. Rose Mary refused to sell any of her property or jewelry and didn’t want a job of watching kids or the elderly because she felt like she wasted enough of her time doing that (not exactly sure who she was raisung because it seemed she was the one being taken care of more than her kids).Rex finally got sober, a place to live, and a job only for Rose Mary to persuade him out of a job so she wouldn’t be alone on the streets even though Rose Mary could have just lived with him but no “Upstate’s the sticks” (page 262). It’s crazy to me to believe just as selfish both of them can be. Now I can’t say they only do bad things, Rex got tuition money for Jeannette that he earned in poker games and Rose Mary encouraged her to use it for her education.

From what I've read in the last two parts. Rose Mary and Rex hasn't really become better parents. Honestly. It's almost as if no change, but yet a bit better. The reason was maybe because since the kids weren't living with the parents anymore, things turned out to be okay and good for the the kids. But then the bad thing was that Rex and Rose Mary had left almost everything behind like always and came to find their kids again. And because of that. It means the parents hasn't really changed yet. Especially Rex, because Brian left his liquor in his apartment locked, but yet Rex used a screwdriver to take the door off its hinges and drunk every single bottle Brian had. But about how they changed? Rex and Rose Mary would call regularly and check up on the kids.

After finishing these last sections of The Glass Castle i realized that in all honesty Rex and Rose can be good and bad parents. Rex wasn’t drinking when he was in jail and Rose was justness lost in a whole other world. Rex and Rose became even moreno filthy and they just didn’t care about anything, especially their kids. Rex and Rose decided to move to New York to be a family again. They proved time and time again that they were just so unstable and not good parents because they kept getting in trouble and getting kicked out where they were staying. In my opinion I think that they had the right idea to move to New York, just not the right mindset. They definitely tried to make things better, but they just made things worse in a way.

Towards the end of the book, the family has moved he New York and Jeannette was living on her own going to college an Lori was letting Rex live with her until she got fed up with him always drinking so she kicked him out and Rex and Rose Mary went back to being homeless. Jeannette end up needing money for college and Rex gives her $950 and she didn’t want to take it but they made her. A while later Rex sks Jeannette to come visit him and ring some alcohol and she does. When he arrives she ends up finding out that Rex is dying. Overall, even though the family didn’t have the best past, I think that the kids turned out fine. Rex and Rose Mary wrent the best parents all throughout the book but towards the end of the book you could tell that they really cared about their kids. After Rex die Jeanette decides its best for her to divorce her husband and start moving until she finds the right place where she can look up at the sky and see stars.
