The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship is the University of Waikato's premier school leaver scholarship. It enables recipients to excel and is for those with strengths in three key pillars: 1) excellence in a sporting code or creative or performing art, 2) high academic achievement, and 3) strong leadership qualities or potential. Recipients will be supported during their studies with a tailored leadership and personal development programme.

For school leavers with strengths in three key pillars: 1) excellence in a sport or creative/performing art, 2) high academic achievement, and 3) strong leadership qualities or potential. The Selection Panel will also take into account the applicant’s willingness and ability to fully participate in, and contribute to, the Hillary Scholarship Programme.

Te Ara Whānui Scholarship recognises the importance the University of Waikato assigns to fostering, developing, and protecting excellence of Māori, and kapa haka, kaupapa Māori, tikanga, reo and/or mātauranga Māori.
Te Ara Whānui can be translated to mean the broad pathway, and is taken from the saying, Te Ara Whānui a Tāne. This is the pathway Tāne climbed into the heavens to seek knowledge, which he returned to earth as a treasure for all people. It is fitting, therefore, that this Scholarship provides a platform for Māori students to strive for excellence in a programme of study at the University of Waikato and to awaken and widen knowledge of Māori.

For domestic students who are studying at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) towards University Entrance in 2019, have cultural excellence in Māori, achieved NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) with Merit or higher, and are intending to enrol full-time at UoW in 2020.

Te Paewai o te Rangi: The University of Waikato Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement has been established to contribute to the University’s Vision of achieving excellence, distinctiveness and international connectedness.

Te Paewai o te Rangi can be translated to mean the water horizon.  It is the place where the ocean meets the sky, and where the sun sets and rises every day.  This is the transition point where Tāne traveled on his quest to ascend into the heavens and to suspend the stars in the sky.  Metaphorically, Te Paewai o te Rangi describes a person’s journey to achieve excellence.  It is the pathway to the stars; an unending pursuit to reach the pinnacle of your desires which in the case of this Scholarship is education and knowledge.

Te Paewai o te Rangi is also a pathway where the terrestrial becomes the celestial and people move on to a higher state of being and understanding.  It is a point where change occurs and people push the boundaries and go beyond the norm. It is fitting therefore that this Scholarship provides a platform for outstanding students to strive for excellence in a programme of study at the University of Waikato and to reach the stars.

The University of Waikato will award up to 50 Scholarships for Outstanding Academic Achievement annually on the basis of academic excellence, leadership potential, and community citizenship.

For school leavers and students who have taken one gap year who are intending to enrol full-time in undergraduate study at UoW in 2020. Applicants must have achieved NCEA Level 2 with Excellence (or equivalent) and must be on-track to achieve NCEA Level 3 with Excellence (or equivalent). Applicants must show exceptional leadership qualities and/or be actively involved in community initiatives.

The ‘Ko Te Tangata’ Scholarship (Bay of Plenty Schools) is the University of Waikato scholarship for the schools of the Bay of Plenty region. As a leading tertiary provider, the University of Waikato has been active in the Bay of Plenty since the 1990s, and with the new University campus due to open in the Tauranga CBD in 2019, our commitment to Tauranga and the Bay is set to endure long into the future. This Scholarship, named ‘for the people’, recognises the University’s strong connection and commitment to the schools and communities of the districts within the Bay of Plenty region, including (in alphabetical order): Kawerau District, Ōpōtoki District, Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty District, Whakatāne District, and parts of Rotorua and Taupō Districts.
The Scholarship will be awarded primarily on the basis of evidence of academic readiness (NCEA Level 2 results), and community involvement. The Scholarship also recognises that for many prospective students, family and financial circumstances are factors that may hinder the opportunity to study at university, and special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate serious financial hardship and/or extraordinary personal circumstances.

Te Manu Kaewa is a reference to the adventurer in search of new horizons. The Manu Kaewa (School Leavers) Scholarship is for school leavers who come to the University of Waikato from schools outside of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.
The Scholarship will be awarded primarily on the basis of evidence of academic readiness (NCEA Level 2 results), leadership, and strong community spirit. The Scholarship also recognises that for many prospective students, family and financial circumstances are factors that may hinder the opportunity to study at university, and special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate serious financial hardship and/or extraordinary personal circumstances.
