Grade retention:

Grade Retention is a horrible thing to do to a child. It is easy for teachers and parents to say, “Oh, the student’s skills will improve very well, and it will do good.” However, it is the student who goes through this whole retention thing. In fact, there is only one Pro in Grade retention, and that is that the child’s studies would improve. I could say that studies and education are critical any day, but there is no use in it if a child’s social behavior is going to be damaged forever. So the pro is: The child gets smarter while learning things once again.

In general, students should remain with age mates but have individual targeted instruction to bring them up to grade level. But that is not true of every case. Some children require retention because of physical or environmental reasons. Each child must be dealt with in the light of their own needs.
