What was the goal of this program?

The goal of this program was to rapidly create manual labor jobs for millions of unemployed workers. It created construction jobs, mainly improving or constructing buildings and bridges. It's goal was also to get people out of the depression and give families higher wages.

Do you think the program was successful? Why or why not?

I think this program was successful because it opened up a ton of jobs for workers. They also led workers to lay 12 million feet of sewer pipes, built and improved 255,000 miles of road, 40,000 schools, 3,700 playgrounds and nearly 1,000 airports. It was also successful because it led to rural areas to profit from the work. Both the cities and the workers benefitted from the CWA which makes it a successful program.

Do you believe that this program was a responsible use of federal funding? Why or why not?

I believe that the CWA was a responsible use of federal funding because it helped many families to get out of the depression. It was also a responsible use of federal funding because it made rural areas profit from the work and labor being done. It also opened up more job opportunities and helped over two-thirds of families to get out of the depression.

Why might some people have been critical of the program you were assigned?

Some people may have been critical about the CWA because it meant that they had to pay higher taxes in order to fund the program. People might have also opposed it because it was all temporary work and not permanent work. They might have felt that it was a short benefit for the cities.

The Civil Works Administration was program created by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration which had a goal of creating more manual labor jobs for unemployed workers. It was funded by the Public Works Administration, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, states, cities, counties and towns. The program was contemplated to give the workers a thirty-hour work week. It also had a high range of employment opportunities which helped families get out of the depression. The workers of the CWA benefited immediately with raise of incomes over their relief allowances. The jobs were temporary during the time of the hard winter. The CWA achieved many things including laying 12 million feet of sewer pipe and built or improved 255,000 miles of roads, 40,000 schools, 3,700 playgrounds, and nearly 1,000 airports
