In the beginning of this unit I had believed in the simple idea that Jesus is one, the son of God and two, He died on the cross for the worlds sins. It wasn't until I was reading the first chapter of Philip Yancey's writing about The Jesus I never Knew that I realized this wasn't the only way I saw Jesus. For me I have gone through ups and downs in my faith. I have completely lost my faith and then there were some times when my faith was me. Yancey wrote one of my most favorite lines, "God has always chosen the slow and difficult way, respecting human freedom regardless of cost." (Ch 11 pg. 218) This has helped me realize that it will always take longer than you think. Your prayers won't be answered right away. Sometimes even the idea of a God takes time to show itself to people. I constantly work with people who have suffered through so much but still have faith. I won't say that their faith hasn't been tested but through God I have tried to deliver messages to those who need it the most. In the Gospel of Mark the Parable of the Mustard Seed is told and it talks about how even the smallest seed will grow to become one of the largest. It is like someones faith. A minuscule seed of faith can be planted into someone's heart and mind. This seed then can either grow to become a great big, beautiful yellow flowering plant. Like I had said faith takes time to grow. Sometimes your faith will wilt and you'll need someone's green thumb to nurse you back to your full glory but in time your faith will flourish.

Philip Yancey is a true christian believer. From faith failing to the full "irreversible will be reversed" belief. He has gone through both and everything in between. Yancey is truly a confusing writer, as he explains his view on Jesus to the world. Yancey begins with a paragraph of when he was a child. We find out that he has been a christian his entire life; raised a christian. He had grown further away from Christ when he was supposed to be most intimate. “Looking in retrospect on my years at Bible college, I see that, despite all the devotional intimacies, Jesus grew remote from me there…He became an object of scrutiny.” (Ch. 1 pg. 14) Jesus became someone Yancey had just known. Like someone you say you used to be best friends with and then something happens so things fall apart. Yancey's faith was removed and he had to rebuild that.

Yancey's view of Jesus is that He was the messianic king for all those who have sinned. C.H. Dodd stated that the belief in the resurrection was "not a belief that grew up within the church; it is the belief around which the church itself grew up, and the 'given' upon which its faith was based." (Ch. 11 pg. 217) So as Yancey grew up so did his faith.

The background I chose says, "Jesus, Son of God." Mark 1:1. It is in the beginning of the Gospel of Mark and it is a continuos theme in this gospel. I thought that by providing just that simple queue in the background may help people remember that in this Gospel and every time someone tends to write about it, it is either Jesus is the Son of God or He is not. It is always about whether He is or He isn't. It truly is that simple. We continue to see that John Mark, the author of the Gospel of Mark truly believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and I think that is one of the most important points to add about this whole project. We ask the question of Who Jesus is but what about What his purpose is.? I think by reading the simple line of "Jesus, Son of God" just keeps you on track about whether you believe that or not. Overall, I didn't need an over complicated background with tons of color and everything because I think simple words explained it all.

Mark makes his beliefs of Jesus very clear in the beginning of the Gospel of Mark, "The beginning of the good news about Jesus, the messiah, the Son of God," (1:1) The next story in the Gospel of Mark is Jesus being baptized by John. God calls out to Jesus and says, "You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." (1:11) This proves that Mark believed that Jesus was the Messiah. We continue to see Jesus heal so many people but He asks them to keep quiet. Why keep all this miraculous healing a secret? Many Jews had many different ideas of who the Messiah would be and what He could do. Jesus wouldn't want people to misunderstand what it means for him to be Israels Messiah.

He is mocked by the people as they give him a crown of thorns and a purple rob like a King. He is then further beaten and mocked and hung upon a cross as if He were a criminal. He dies upon the cross but this then turns out eyes towards a new character in our story. A Roman soldier who suddenly understands everything that's going on. "Surely this man was the Son of God." Yancey began his life long journey as a christian at a young age but has obviously developed it throughout time. Yancey wrote, "In the cloud of grief over Bob's death, I began to see the meaning of Easter in a new light. As a five year old on Easter Sunday I had learned the harsh lesson of irreversibility. Now, as an adult, I saw that Easter actually held out the awesome promise of reversibility. Nothing - no, not even death - was final. Even that could be reversed."
