He grew up in both El Paso, where his father was from, and the neighboring city of Juárez, Mexico, where his mother was from. He now lives in Boston, Massachusetts.
Raúl started his career as an artist, his work including paintings, graphic novel illustrations, and comic book illustrations.
Raúl then began illustrating for children's books in 2014, some of his most notable illustrations being those featured in the Lowriders in Space series written by Cathy Camper.
Later, in 2019, Raúl authored his first book ¡Vamos!
