Two types:
  • Individual

Search engines compile their databases by employing "spiders" or "robots" to crawl through a web space from link to link.
Pros:
  • allows access to large portions of publicly available pages
  • best way to search web
Cons:
  • Number of words indexed by search engines increases the likelihood that you will get hundred of thousands of responses to simple search requests
  • many irrelevant items to you original search

  • When looking for information on a specific topic such as archives

    Title searching- this is usually located at the top of browser's window.
    Domain searching is where you can choose to limit your field search to 1 of the top level domains.
    Host or stite searching is when you are seeking information on a specific computer or server.
    URL searching can help your search move more quickly.
    Link searching is when you have a web page and you want to know who is linking to it.

    • Too few documents- may be searching in wrong place or need to narrow
    • A "404--File not Found"- try to shorten the URL 
    • "Server does not have DNS entry"- it cannot locate server so you can recheck the spelling
    • Server error- server may have crashed and you can try again later
