Week 7 - Appreciation To The Nature & Environment, Sustainability in Islam

In Islam, appreciation for nature and the environment is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him). Sustainability is not just a modern concept but an integral part of Islamic ethics, emphasizing balance, responsibility, and stewardship of the Earth. Here are some key principles:

1. Nature as a Sign of God (Ayat)

Islam teaches that nature is a reflection of God’s power and wisdom. The Quran frequently calls upon believers to observe nature as a means of understanding divine wisdom:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran 3:190)

This verse encourages reflection on nature, promoting gratitude and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.

2. Stewardship (Khilafah)

Humans are considered khalifah (stewards) on Earth, entrusted by God to take care of it responsibly:

“It is He who has made you successors (stewards) upon the earth.” (Quran 35:39)

This stewardship requires sustainable use of resources, preventing overexploitation and environmental harm.

3. Avoiding Waste (Israf & Tabdheer)

Islam strongly discourages wastefulness:

“And do not waste (resources) extravagantly. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils.”(Quran 17:26-27)

This principle applies to food, water, and all natural resources, promoting mindful consumption.

4. Conservation of Water and Resources

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized water conservation, even in abundance:

“Do not waste water, even if performing ablution at a flowing river.” (Ibn Majah)

This highlights the importance of sustainable water usage, a principle highly relevant today.

5. Planting Trees and Caring for the Earth

Planting trees and preserving greenery is considered an act of charity and a source of reward:

“If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Prophet Muhammad also commanded against unnecessary deforestation and promoted environmental preservation.

6. Ethical Treatment of Animals

Islam emphasizes kindness towards animals. The Prophet (pbuh) spoke against cruelty and emphasized that all creatures deserve care and respect:

“Whoever is kind to the creatures of God is kind to himself.” (Bukhari)

7. Balance and Moderation (Mizan)

The Quran describes creation as being in balance (mizan), urging humans to maintain this harmony:

“And He set the balance, so that you may not transgress the balance.”(Quran 55:7-8)

This applies to ecological balance, sustainable living, and ethical environmental practices.

8. Prohibition of Environmental Harm (Fasad)

Causing corruption (fasad) on Earth, including pollution and destruction of ecosystems, is condemned in Islam:

“And do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation.” (Quran 7:56)

This encourages responsible actions to protect and restore the environment.

Conclusion

Islam’s environmental ethics emphasize gratitude, moderation, conservation, and responsibility. Through concepts like khilafah (stewardship), mizan (balance), and israf (avoidance of waste), Islamic teachings encourage sustainable living in harmony with nature. Today, these principles are more relevant than ever in addressing global environmental challenges.

1)Setting the Right Intention (Niyyah)

In Islam, setting the correct intention (niyyah) is crucial because every action is judged based on its intention. The niyyah must come sincerely from the heart and be done solely for the sake of Allah, not for fame or the approval of others. It doesn’t need to be spoken aloud, but it should guide both our acts of worship and daily routines. With a sincere intention, even simple tasks like eating or working can become acts of worship. Muslims should regularly reflect on and renew their intentions to avoid arrogance or showing off. Ultimately, the sincerity of one’s niyyah plays a key role in whether a deed is accepted and rewarded.

2)Performing the Right Actions (Amal)

In Islam, performing the right action (amal) means doing something sincerely for Allah and in accordance with the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It involves both having the correct intention and following the proper method. Muslims are encouraged to engage in beneficial actions, avoid harm, and act with good manners and integrity. Even small deeds, if done consistently, are greatly valued. Doing the right action means choosing the right deed, doing it the right way, and for the right reason.

3)Embodying Good Virtues

Embodying good virtues means making positive traits like honesty, patience, and kindness a natural part of our character. It’s more than just knowing what’s right — it’s about living those values every day. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the best role model in displaying excellent character. When we respond to others with kindness and stay composed during difficult times, we show our true character. With constant effort and Allah’s guidance, these virtues can become a part of our daily life and help us grow in faith.

Week 3 - How to obtain Khusyu in Salah

1)Understand What You Recite in Prayer

Truly understanding the words you recite during Salah can significantly enhance your concentration and spiritual connection. When you know the meaning of each phrase, your prayer becomes more than just a routine — it becomes a heartfelt conversation with Allah. Instead of simply repeating sounds out of habit, your heart becomes engaged and your mind becomes more present. This deeper awareness brings greater sincerity, helping you feel the beauty and significance of each part of the prayer.

2)Mentally Prepare Yourself and Focus Before Praying

Before beginning your prayer, take a few moments to mentally prepare yourself. Reflect on the fact that you are about to stand before your Creator. Try to pause, breathe, and clear your mind of any distractions, worries, or thoughts about your daily responsibilities. Avoid rushing into Salah, and instead, enter with a calm and focused mindset. This mental preparation sets the tone for a more mindful and humble prayer, allowing you to be more present in your worship.

3)Choose a Quiet and Clean Place to Pray

The environment where you pray plays a big role in your ability to concentrate. A clean, quiet, and peaceful space can help reduce distractions and keep your mind from wandering. When your surroundings are calm and organized, it becomes easier to focus solely on your connection with Allah. Avoid noisy or cluttered areas, as they can easily pull your attention away from your prayer. Creating a dedicated space for worship can also help you develop a habit of praying with more presence and devotion.

1)Ta’ah (Obedience to Allah)

Performing Salah with complete focus reflects Ta’ah sincere obedience to Allah’s command. This means taking the time to assess your inner state, your intentions, and the level of sincerity in your worship.

1)Sabr (Patience and Endurance)

Fasting is a powerful way to cultivate sabr, or patience. It trains a person to endure hunger, thirst, and physical tiredness without complaint, building both emotional and spiritual resilience. By controlling one’s temper, avoiding arguments, and refraining from negative speech, a fasting person develops strong self-discipline. This act of patience also teaches the ability to delay gratification and stay committed to obeying Allah, even in moments of discomfort. Over time, fasting strengthens inner willpower and the ability to remain calm and focused in all areas of life.

2)Taqrim (Honour and Respect)

Fasting nurtures taqrim, which means honor, respect, and dignity. It encourages a heightened awareness of one’s behavior, leading to greater self-respect and a conscious effort to act righteously. Through modesty, humility, and controlling the ego, a person gains dignity in both private and public conduct. Fasting also teaches respect for others — by avoiding harmful words, rude actions, and being mindful of how we treat people with kindness and compassion. It serves as a reminder to honor sacred times like prayer, as well as uphold good manners and etiquette throughout the day.

3)Rahmah (Mercy and Compassion)

Fasting awakens the quality of rahmah, or mercy, within the heart. By experiencing hunger firsthand, a person becomes more empathetic towards the poor, the needy, and those who struggle daily. This shared experience nurtures a soft heart and encourages charitable actions, such as giving food, helping others, and being kind in both words and deeds. It also promotes forgiveness, gentleness, and greater understanding in relationships. Ultimately, fasting helps reflect Allah’s attribute of mercy, as the believer becomes more compassionate and loving in their interactions with others.

1)Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah)

Paying Zakat helps develop true tawakkul, or reliance on Allah. By willingly giving away part of one’s wealth, a person learns to detach from material possessions and place their trust in Allah’s provision. It reminds us that wealth is a gift and a test, and that real sustenance comes not from saving or hoarding, but from the blessings of Allah. When Zakat is given sincerely, the giver believes wholeheartedly that Allah will replace and multiply what was given, often in unexpected ways. This act of charity frees the soul from dependence on material things and strengthens spiritual confidence in Allah’s promise of reward and increase.

2)Ukhuwah (Brotherhood and Solidarity)

Zakat plays a powerful role in nurturing ukhuwah, the sense of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim ummah. By assisting the poor and those in need, it builds stronger bonds between different segments of the community. It reduces the gap between the wealthy and the less fortunate, helping to remove feelings of envy or resentment and replacing them with compassion and mutual support. Through Zakat, the rich fulfill their duty to help others, while the poor make du’a and appreciate the care shown to them. This mutual love and responsibility create a more united, caring society — one in which no one is forgotten or left behind.
