I've been a music student since 6th grade, played saxophone in school all the way until senior year of highschool, and also played various drums on my own time until joining the Drum line for my last two years of High School. After taking two years off from school, I decided to come back as a Freshman in the Fall of last year, and also landed a spot on the TTU Drum Line. All kinds of music have been a major part of my life growing up, but the one musician who has stuck with me for as long as I can remember is Michael Jackson, and this is one of my all-time favorites from him since I was very young.

In high school I met one of my best friends who is Korean and she and her family taught me more about their culture and language (which I'm still working on learning) and she introduced me to the music. I hope that through the Air Force or other career options I will be able to live all over the world and learn even more. I also enjoy listening to music in a variety of languages and this song has been a favorite of mine for some time now.

hi! my name is Rachel Wilkinson and I'm a Freshman beginning my second semester here. I am from Austin TX, and I'm a psych major wanting to go into a psychotherapy career path. I originally wanted to be a music therapist, but I decided to keep music as my own personal therapy instead. I play the flute and piano, and I also have a pretty versatile taste in music. writing poetry (or being in nature) and listening to classical music is one of my favorite things to, and this song has not only been one of my favorites, but its a good reperesentation of the kind of music that awakens every part of my should and makes me feel a little more alive. I really enjoy the full sound in moments of this piece and the fluctuation of dynamics.

One song that is definitely tied to Lubbock would be the Texas Tech fight song. The connection to Lubbock is obvious because Texas Tech is located here, however I chose this because it represents one of my favorite times of year. I have grown up watching both professional and college football, so getting to experience the games at The Jones is exciting. The fight song also has a positive connotation since it is always played after Tech scores!

When thinking about Lubbock, I kept hearing The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks. I continued to look fo other songs but I think that this song embodies most of the characteristics of Lubbock. Due to the acres of farmland, the terrain is mostly flat with not a lot to absorb the sound waves causing the sound of thunder to roll for miles through the air. As in Lubbock, you are most likely to hear country music and this song embodies the genre that many locals are infatuated with. Lubbock was also voted the Toughest Weather City in 2013 making it more likely for storms to pop up (probably not soon enough). Lastly, during thunderstorms many locals won’t get out of the house to drive as we have learned that people who drive around in rainstorms are not the safest to the rest of us.

This song has alot of significance in my life since it really represented how I felt going through tough times in my life. When my mother exited from my life and my father was working really long hours for us just to be able to survive, I really felt alone. So depressed I had no friends to talk to, it was just, me. But, it made me realize other people probably felt the same way. This song taught me maybe by helping others through their issues, I can help myself as well.

Not only was this song significant because the Beatles were often played in my house growing up, but this song was also the first song that my dad taught my cousin to play on guitar. This was the beginning of my cousin's passion for music that eventually led him to become a professional musician. The connection between my cousin, my dad, and this song is a good representation of how my dad impacted other peoples lives, so this song really means a lot to me.

I grew up listening to this kind of music, and I can always picture listening to all the songs blaring through my house on my dad's record player or through the car speakers on a long road trip. I find myself still listening to this type of music from time to time just as a reminder of home and where I came from.

It's really hard to pick a specific song that reinds me of home since the entirety of classic rock is what I heard as I grew up. Nearly all of my family on both sides listens to 70s-90s rock and metal, and every time I'm around them, there's rock and roll playing. In terms of my physical home where I grew up, my parents would play classic rock radio every Sunday of the week, and eventually got to the point where I would wake up on a Sunday and, not knowing why, would expect to hear some classic rock. It was only as I got older that I realized it was a Sunday regular. I choose this Van Halen song as it's one of the only ones I can remember the name of, and it's also a really good song.

I lived in Japan for a total of 12 years, 10 years being from birth to age 10. Going to school on a military base, you would hear these both in the morning before class started. You would also hear both at 5 pm. Because of how influential both cultures have been, I can't really choose one song over the other. They're both home to me. It talks about how people may take different paths in life, but they still have the desire to get to there. There's also a lot of references that suggest that home/heaven means something different for everyone. In the beginning, there's a line that says "whether you're working 9-5 or just trying to stay alive, home just sorta feels like heaven" - possibly suggesting the universal desire for home or a home-like feeling.

I’ve moved around so much when I was younger because of my fathers work. We finally just decided to take our stay in San Antonio, his hometown. By then I knew the idea of friends and house not being such a permanent fixture in my life. Things change all the time and being able to adapt was my forte. Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes helps me personify that feeling. It’s mainly about falling in love and feeling at home with that individual but I feel like the lyric “Home is where’s ever I’m with you.” helps me explain that the feeling of home isn’t a structure or someone you’ve known forever it’s potentially someone you just met and connect with.

This is the song that ends the musical and it talks about the Jews in a small Russian community are being forced out of their homes by the USSR and just find a new place and what they can take with them and what they are unable to take with them. This is an extremely sad song about forced migration and leaving people that you have been around for many years.

The song begins with an African sounding chant. There are slaves portrayed working in the fields, then there is a transition to "house slaves". The drum beat as well as the call and response style allude to African music style. His rap is about love and hate, but Cole revealed in an interview that his intent in using the elements presented in the music video was to unify the listeners.

I'm not sure how outside the box this is, but this song came to mind. M.I.A was actually a refugee from Sri Lanka when war was going on, and moved to England when she was a child. The song has been controversial but in her words, the song was meant to "satirize widespread negative stereotypes about immigrants. The "character" rapping in "Paper Planes" is not, then, the real M.I.A. but is instead a fictional thug representing the sum of all prejudices about dark-skinned foreigners supposedly menacing Western society." Sometimes I feel like people people blame refugees for things like war going on in their country, as well as assume that all refugees coming from war zones are criminals or thugs. So, in a way, I feel like this addresses her journey as a refugee as well as what it feels like to be perceived as a thug solely on where she comes from.

So I posted two different songs. The first one is the Rocky Road to Dublin which is about a young Irishman who wanted to leave his home and go to Dublin. After he arrived, he began missing home and got aboard a ship to head back home after taking the road to Dublin. I thought it said alot about how leaving home isn’t always as glamorous as people thought and they would have to struggle to get back to their home.
The second video is a cover of Early in the Morning which is the song Professor Brinker played in class with the men and the sledge hammer singing prison song.

https://open.spotify.com/track/0Au0gkWZN4KqR5Yvz6C3EP?si=uwU7lI89SKGLSGY0dqrDFA

I figured Bessie Smith and Muddy Waters was my best best and I was right. One interpretation of this song is the long journey African Americans made from the South to the North. It's forced migration because if they stayed in the South, there life would never get better. Actually, you could argue they did not start "living" until they got to the North.

The idea of traveling through space and seeing new worlds is possible but we must reach a type 3 civilization. She also describes the ideal America that she pictures from the perspective of a woman who doesn't always feel safe in her own country.

Kanye specifically attacks private prisons, which purposely incarcerate minorities and use them for free labor, hence the name "New Slaves." He also emphasizes how large corporations try to control him and his ideas since he has so much influence.

Sorry for the poor quality but this song is from Cambodia and is about how the people fought for their lives and battled against the Khmer Rouge who took power in 1975 around the time of the Vietnam war. The Khmer Rouge and their leader Pol Pot believed in building a utopian (communist) society where everyone was equal in every way possible. They forced people out of their homes and they had to give up everything the owned to move to the countryside and begin an agrarian life style. When they were raiding the towns, if they felt that you were any sort of elite being or had any power over others such as previous political members and even teachers, they would either kill you on the spot, or imprison you and your entire family which had greater than a 99% death rate. Eventually the Khmer Rouge was put out of power but only after more than 1.5 million people were either killed or died of starvation. The Members of the Khmer Rouge were never punished and this song commemorates all the suffering the people of Cambodia had to endure and how they bravely fought against the leaders.

So this song has a clear political message in favor of same-sex marriage which is still hugely controversial. The song actually gained way more popularity after the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. Macklemore partnered with the Music For Marriage Equality campaign. He wrote the song from his perspective of growing up in a culture where “that’s gay” was common, with a huge stigma on those who identified and were perceived as gay. He calls lots of people out in our society, the church, hip hop, etc. Intolerance of the gay community in hip hop is widespread. “The best rappers will use homophobic language on albums that critics rave about, making hip hop and homophobia inextricably linked. We have sidestepped the issue entirely, become numb to the language that we use, and are increasingly blinded to our own prejudice.” This song was created to challenge our culture, the way we speak about issues, and to create a dialog where we can openly reflect on our choices and prejudices. When we do that, there is room for growth and justice.

She has had an extremely successful solo career and recently has broken down some walls as to what was considered okay for women to do in performances as she has taken on a more "sexy" style of music, dress, and performance. Because of this her popularity skyrocketed and she's continued on with the style. I chose this specific song because it's one of her most popular song and almost everyone knows the dance including me :)

They have numerous hit singles such as “We are the Champions”, “We will Rock You”, and arguably the most iconic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” What set Queen apart from other bands was Freddie’s stage performances and his drastic singing range of 3 octaves and that’s only the confirmed octaves. This influenced future artists to give the stage attention as well as to sing outside their comfort zones. Here is an example of his insane vocal range.

Lana Del Rey is an American singer/songwriter that tends to write about glamour, tragic heartbreak, and 50’s and 60’s mindset. Lana del rey (Elizabeth Grant) was born June 21st 1985, in New York City. while she had been composing, previously to this, her career skyrocketed in 2011 when she released her signature song “ Video Games”. Her 1950’s and 60’s inspiration makes many of her songs sound like they are coming from a woman struggling to fit in with society during that time period. Not only does she have a heavy vintage vibe, she also has a tendency to explore more melancholy perspectives of societal problems or standards, and therefore portrays a heartfelt, melancholy vibe.
