In the article EXTREME PERCEPTION AND ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE, by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson It is stated that intelligence does not depend on the characteristics that each person or animal has, but on how they respond to problems using their perceptive abilities. Deciding what to do to achieve a goal is what makes a person or animal intelligent.

Intelligence is not measured by the unique characteristics that each person or dog has but by the ability they develop, for example, seizure alert dogs are trained to help their owners during their seizures but only some develop the ability to predict seizures , this is true cognition. Only 10 percent of dogs that are trained to respond to a seizure pick up the signs of a seizure early, but no one knows how they do it because humans can't sense the signs. There was an amazing article in the New York Times about Ms. Standley's dogs, which were trained to respond to a seizure, but can predict 80 percent of their seizures half an hour before they happen. A case similar to seizure-alert dogs is the horse Clever Hans, whose owner Herr Von Osten thought he could solve math problems because when asked, the horse responded by tapping his hoof. The psychologist Oskar Pfungst showed that Hans did not actually count but only perceived the unconscious movements that people made. Psychologists often use this story as evidence that animals are not intelligent, but the reality is that no one taught Hans to detect the unconscious movements of humans and that is what is important in Hans's story. Hans and the Seizure Alert Dogs have developed special abilities that no human being can teach any dog or horse, this feature shows the great intelligence they show. Intelligence goes beyond the abilities that each person or animal normally has, it is what they choose to do on their own regardless of what they have learned

In conclusion, intelligence goes beyond the abilities that each person or animal can acquire through practice or teaching from an external person, it is the only ability that only some develop by themselves.
