My book is set in present time in a town called Morrison, I know this because in the book they are in a movie theater Mike’s friend Meckles walks towards him and he mentions that they are in Morrison and that it is present time; “Over six feet of solid muscle, currently making his way over to them in too much flannel and baggy jeans, like he time-traveled to modern-day Morrison from Seattle circa 1995.” It lets the reader know the level of acceptance of gay culture, how this would affect his life (what people would think about him). Because we know it is present time, we know that people are much more accepting and open minded of gay culture.

The main character is 16 years old and a junior in high school, his name is Michael Allan Tate, he is tall, skinny, with dirty blonde hair and angular nordic features. He lives in a house with his mother and his little sister Rosie whom he is very fond of. Mike likes to think of himself as popular, he is in a sort of band in which he plays guitar and is good at baseball but doesn’t play for his school because as a child, he was beat up by another kid named Rook Wallace after their little league games.

A conflict in the book, Whatever is man vs. self. This conflict involves Mike Tate and him fighting against himself about his sexuality and about his love interest, Rook Wallace. The main antagonist of this conflict is Mike himself, I know this because the whole time Mike is fighting with himself, trying to convince himself that he isn’t gay, that he doesn’t like Rook; “Maybe Wallace is just curious. Maybe he’s doing some experimenting himself, and Mike seems like a good choice to dick around with."

The theme of the book Whatever to fully be yourself, you need to embrace everything about yourself. I think this because the whole time Mike was denying the fact that he is gay and during that time he was off, he was fighting against himself and because of that he wasn't able to love who he wanted to.

Book Review

Whatever was an amazing book, it had me compelled to read it the whole time. It was very relatable to modern teens struggling with their sexulatity and it's a very current story. I enjoyed every moment of it, it made me laugh, it made me cry and it made me warm inside. It pulled every heartstring and I fell in love with every single character including Leoni punched Mike in the nose; who you couldn't help but hate. My favorite character was probably Meckles. Meckles was awkward and weird and really tall. But Meckles was not the protagonist; Mike was the main protagonist, Mike was very different. My favorite part of Mike was his affection towards his little sister Rosie. They would build pillow forts, eat poptarts for dinner and look for hermit crabs when she lost them. But overall, this book was amazing.

Leadership in the Book

The protagonist Mike, is a leader in different ways. One way he was a leader is through his friends; he was one of the leaders of his band. One example of this is, "Mike likes to think he's popular. He's in a sort-of band with three other popular dudes and Jason, who is barely cool by association, but they let him hang because he's the only one who knows how to even turn on the Casio." this shows how Mike believes he is a leader in his band along with his friends, Cam, Omar and Meckles. Mike is not the only one who acts like a leader. Lisa- Mike's ex-girlfriend -also acts like a leader, she takes charge and becomes student body president. She ropes Mike into running with her as his vice president; "Two words for you, Tate," she says, poking him in the ribs. "Student Council" ... Lisa says, "You need to be my running mate." MIke laughs. "You're on crack, no way am I running for vice president," he says ... Smith sits one row away from Mike in homeroom, so Mike can see the blatant relief on his face when the loudspeacker announces Lis and Mike the winners of the junior class election." this proves that Lisa was a clear leader in this book.
