Backhoe loader technology began in 1835 with the invention of the "shovel dredger," which could dig the soil and hard rock, and then load it into cars. It was a steam-powered machine and mounted on rails for mobility. Rail tracks were eventually located in mines and large excavation projects to make use of this new machine.
However, the shovel dredger was an extremely large machine with limited movement. The backhoe became its smallest and most versatile descendant.

From the beginning of the 1900s to the 1950s, the backhoe was unable to operate on smaller work projects because of its size. That is why these works were carried out with agricultural tractors.
At the end of the 1950s, residential development was booming and the construction of houses required a smaller machine capable of operating in tighter spaces. This stimulated the changes in the design of the backhoe.
By 1957, an engineer named Elton Long took the versatility of the backhoe to the next level by mounting a magazine to the opposite side of the machine.
