I review each element and component of the prompt.

I then ask myself what am I being asked to do. Then, I form a general outline of what needs to be included in my writing. Then I step back and write it in my head on how I want to present it. Once I feel this approach will work, I write until I can’t anymore. Then I draw it down to ensure I get my point across and then make it concise.

This has helped me over the years. My weakness would be to add too many tangents in my story telling.

My Writing Process - Ideas to Final Draft (Emily)

My approach to writing begins by jotting down every idea or thought that comes to mind regarding the prompt. From there, I recognize patterns or identify things that stand out. Next, I create an outline and strategize the important points I need to address or emphasize. After that, I work on my draft and revise it for the final version. My strength I would say is my creativity and an area I would want to improve is bringing out more emotion in my writing.

I try to get writing assignments done at one time and I do think it hinders my work a lot of the time. I feel like I have a strong vocabulary, however I struggle with conveying emotions and getting my message across. I can be a bit wordy and need to work on developing that building that conciseness. I also want to get better and connect ideas together instead of them being completely separate. Tying them in is the key.

When writing it really depends on the prompt how I decide to approach it. Certain prompts I feel confident answering as a stream of conscious. Other writings I feel the need to do more intensive outlines. Most of my writings I do through just writing out my drafts and then revising and editing them to perfection.

I usually make a quick outline to deeply organize my thoughts. Then I write a draft, just focusing on getting all my ideas down on paper. After that, I revise it to make it clearer and fix any mistakes. I think I’m good at explaining things and organizing ideas, but I overthink to make everything seem as perfect. I know that this desire of perfection slows me down. So I’m trying to just trust my intuition and first drafts more to not get stuck on small unimportant details. 🍀

When I have to write an assignments, at first I start thinking about it on my head and draw an imagination draft. I try to brainstorm and I do it before doing any research or start writing. For this, I don't separate any time. I just do this brain work while doing other stuffs over the days. I feel like this is just a mental prep for me before diving into the main paper.

When I'm done with my mental prep, I spend some hours actually writing the paper and doing my research on the topic. When I write my first draft, I don't care about the grammar or sentence structures. I just put down all my thoughts in the doc. When I feel like I have all the important topics and ideas written on, I start working on the grammars and sentence structures, making it sound like "formal/professional". I do all of this writing process in 5/6 hours, in one seating. Otherwise I loose focus if I take breaks.

After that, I don't look at that paper for 1/2 day. After the 1/2 day break, I come back to the paper and reread. That time i find a lot of faults and areas that can be improved. I work on that again for another 2/3 hours and finally submit it.

This is exactly what I did while writing my Cell Biology research paper in the last 2 days.

For improvement, I think I should try to see if I can spend a little less time doing this all process. But I always get full/almost full points in all my writing assignments, lab reports or research papers.
