I used Final Cut Pro to edit it, and I did a pretty bad job editing, but I just didn't have the time to make it better. This originally started as a passion project called Opal Wisdom where everyday I put a picture of Opal, and a little quote in a discord group I run. She was 3 months old when I started rehabbing, and I had to feed her formula every 6 hours. It is December 2022 right now, and she is still doing well. Over the past 5 months I have learned and experienced so much from taking care of her. To start off let’s talk about the legality of what I did. It is not legal for a person in california to own or rehab an opossum; however, it is perfectly legal to trap or kill an opossum in any way you see fit so as far as I’m concerned I just determined that the best method I could use to kill Opal is giving her moderate amounts of food, water, and love over the course of 3 years (the natural lifespan of an opossum is 2-3 years). There aren't many transmittable diseases you can get from opossums, so I never really felt like I was putting myself in danger by rehabbing this opossum. Even though it was an incredibly rewarding experience rehabbing Opal it was also very difficult. You have to be very patient, be ok being sleep deprived, be willing to get messy, and you have to have a good intuitive sense of what they need. I saved Opal’s life by rehabbing her, but almost more important than that I’ve been able to use my experience to educate people on opossums as a species. I have talked to a couple of people that said they would intentionally hit them with their car, but after talking to me about them they actually stopped. Before I started rehabbing Opal I had done about 15+ hours of research, and I did about 20+ more after I found her. Opossums have a bunch of tiny things that can go wrong with them, so if you’re going to rehab one you really need to know what to look out for. Opal brings so much happiness to everyone she meets, and I truly believe in this case that it was morally and ethically correct to rehab her.
