Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes every year, on average that is 3287 deaths a day. As well as an additional 20 to 50 million injured. A study in New Zealand found that the car colour in the most accidents was black and that the safest car colour was silver. But there are many factors to consider when thinking about motor vehicle accidents. One of which would be the timing. When do you think car accidents are most likely to occur?A theory brought up by researchers was that motor vehicle accidents were more likely to occur between 3 PM and 6 PM, which is also known as rush-hour. It’s believed that the reason motor vehicle accidents occur more often in this timeframe is because there are a lot more cars on the road. During this time the amount of cars on the road make it so traffic is moving at a much slower pace. This can cause people to get frustrated and be more agitated which may cause them to get into more accidents. During long periods of backed up traffic people may play on their phones to pass the time or could just not be paying much attention, in which case the distracted driving could cause an accident.Another theory brought up by researchers is that motor vehicle accidents are also more likely to happen on a Saturday rather than any other day of the week. The reason they had for this theory was that on Saturdays there are more cars out and as well that there is a higher chance that there will be drunk drivers on the road.The third theory is about driving tired. Statistics have shown that driving tired can have just as serious and drastic outcomes as drunk driving. The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police released a document outlining several underlying causes of motor vehicle accidents. It was called “Take the D out of Driving”, in which it listed some unsafe driving conditions starting with D such as drunk, drugged, drowsy, distracted, dangerously and detached.I think the most logical theory is that being tired can be as fatal as being drunk behind the wheel. Being tired slows down your reflexes and reaction time just like being drunk can do. I think you should always be careful when driving. Just watch for what others are doing, drive carefully and always be aware of your surroundings.
