Bulgarian embroidery is one of the traditional Bulgarian crafts, used to decorate clothing - shirts, jackets, pants, aprons etc and other household goods such as table cloths, table toppers, table sets, pillow cases, curtains and more. The variety of the materials used is very large due to the rich heritage of the BUlgarian history (wool, cotton, linen, hemp, silk) and the creative talent of the Bulgarian women.

At the end of the 19th century are formed two regions with different embroideries, depending on the lifestyle of the population and the characteristics of the national clothing:

The Western ethnographic area where the main colors are red and pink and the complementary colors are blue, green and yellow. The most often found motifs are from the the flora and the fauna.

In The Eastern ethnographic area prevail the dark colors - dark red, brown, black, purple. The most used motifs are inspired by the flora and some geometric figures.

If you look at any Bulgarian embroidery, you will immediately feel the beauty and the harmony. There are researchers claiming that it represents characters and symbols in which are encoded incredible messages as the Bulgarian women have put their love for the home and the nature. The Bulgarian embroideries were set to bring health, love, fertility and prosperity. They are a symbol of the harmony in the world and the humans.

Red, brown, black, blue, green, yellow in all of their nuances are the traditional colours of Bulgarian embroidery. It has practically all colours in existence, depending on the region.

Ornaments unique to traditional Bulgarian embroidery are: The tree of life, horses, leaning flowers, animal figures, rooster heads – all this is very typical, as is the kene – a special kind of needle laceused mostly for decorating the clothes themselves – the bodices, the sleeves, the skirts. Traditional Bulgarian embroidery is a wealth of ornaments and colours.

The saya dress includes a tunic-like chemise as its major component, but it is characterized by the so-called sayaalways worn as an outer garment. Open in the front part, slightly wedged, the skirt length varying (knee or ankle length), the sleeves short or long. The saya textiles were of different material and colour. Predominant were the one-colour white, black, blue, and dark blue saya dresses made of cotton or woolen fabrics. (A widespread variant typical of the region along the middle reaches of the Maritsa is made of multi-coloured striped cloth with dominating red.) The decoration of the saya is concentrated on the neck and the borders of the sleeves.

The other important element is the waist-band, black or red, made of woolen fabric. The apron is also woolen, most often red, striped or with multiple woven ornamentation (in some South-western regions). More popular later became the apron decorated with gold threads, used mainly on festive occasions.

The saya female costume was preserved as late as the mid 20th century when it gave way to modern urban clothes of European type.

…………………………...............................................................................................................................

The emergence of another type of men's costume - chernodreshna - was part of a country-wide trend of men's clothes becoming darker, particularly prominent in the period of the Bulgarian Revival. This tendency was the result of the new social, economic, and cultural context. Beginning from the late 18th century till the middle of the 19th century men's clothes were no longer made of white aba (a kind of woollen cloth). They were instead made of black shayak (woollen textile), the pants and outer garment being of different cuts.

The pants, called potouri, are broad, with abundant black braiding decoration. An interesting point is the widespread popular belief that the more folded and pleated the potouri (their bottom in particular), the more well-to-do their owner.

The outer clothes (elek, aba, anteriya) are of straight cut and waist length.

nen pillows embroidery is part of traditional Bulgarian costume decoration. The traditional ornaments are unique with the plenty of patterns, stitches and wealth of colours. The floral patterns are predominant – stylised flowers (rose, tulip, carnation), wheat, also the ancient pattern of the tree of life. Much more rarely met are patterns representing animal figures (chickens, horses) and human figures can be sometimes seen (“horo”, “kukeri”). Along with the floral, animals and human patterns can be found geometrical ones too (triangles, tetragons, rhombs), as well as the magic and invocatory ensigns (crosses, swastika, star). One of the most valuable qualities of Bulgarian national embroidery is its colouring, built on numerous colour combinations: red, green, blue, brown and black. The Bulgarian woman has used more than 100 types of stitches depending on the pattern and textile. The main types of stitches are: straight, slanting and cross.

Hand-embroidered: silk, cotton and linen: men shirts, women blouses, dresses and shirts; children's shirts, blouses and dresses;

Hand-embroidered silk, cotton and linen: tablecloths, serviettes;

Hand-embroidered silk, cotton and linen: handkerchiefs, scarves, belts;

Hand-embroidered linen albums for photos, notebooks, book-covers; bookmarks;

Hand-embroidered li

s, bags;
